Did You Know? Harvest Bend Seniors, Veterans, and Low-Income Residents May Qualify for Free Home Repairs

October 13 2025

Did you know there’s a free program available that could help some Harvest Bend homeowners fix up their homes—without spending a dime? For seniors, veterans, and low-income families in the neighborhood, critical home repair assistance is just an application away.

Through Houston Habitat for Humanity’s Critical Home Repair Program, qualifying residents can receive vital home improvements that not only restore safety and comfort—but may also prevent expensive deed restriction violations that come with falling behind on upkeep.

Free Home Repairs That Make a Difference

If you're a homeowner in Harvest Bend who’s struggling with repairs you can’t afford, you're not alone—and you're not without options. Whether it’s a damaged roof, unsafe flooring, plumbing problems, or the need for accessibility upgrades like ramps or grab bars, Houston Habitat may be able to help.

The Critical Home Repair Program focuses on keeping people in their homes and preserving the integrity of Houston-area neighborhoods. By repairing homes rather than tearing them down or replacing them with costly new builds, the program supports affordable living and helps long-term residents stay rooted in their communities.

Did You Know? Seniors and Veterans Have Special Options

This program includes two specialized services—Senior Home Repair and Veteran Home Repair—each designed to meet the unique needs of older adults and those who served in the military.

According to AARP, nearly 80% of older Americans wish to stay in their homes as they age, but more than a third say they’ll need changes to do so—like making bathrooms safer or installing ramps. Houston Habitat's Senior Repair program provides these modifications using a model called Housing Plus, which assesses both the home and the homeowner’s needs.

For veterans, the program is backed by The Home Depot Foundation and the Texas Veterans Commission’s Fund for Veterans’ Assistance. It offers repairs that improve safety and accessibility, helping former service members live independently in homes they already own. Nearly 1 in 3 older veterans lives with a disability, and many face higher housing costs—making these services especially impactful.

Avoiding HOA Violations the Smart Way

In communities like Harvest Bend, homeowners are expected to maintain their properties according to deed restrictions. But when repairs become unaffordable, violations can pile up. This is where Houston Habitat’s program can make a big difference—by helping eligible residents stay compliant while also preserving their health and safety.

It’s a win-win for both residents and the neighborhood. Keeping existing homes in good shape helps maintain property values and fosters pride within the community.

Ready to Apply? Here's How

Applications are open now for residents of Harvest Bend and beyond. If you’re a senior (62+), a veteran, or a low-income homeowner, click here to apply.

You’ll need to provide some basic information and, if you’re a veteran, be sure to note that in the application along with your specific repair needs.
