Recycling Services in Elgin

Recycling is included with regular weekly trash service for all residential customers inside city limits. Recycling provides multiple community benefits:

  • Conserves natural resources by reducing the need for raw materials
  • Creates jobs in the recycling and manufacturing industries
  • Saves landfill space and cuts disposal costs
What Can Be Recycled?
  • Paper & Cardboard – flattened boxes, office paper, newspapers, magazines
  • Metal Cans – aluminum and steel food/beverage cans
  • Plastic Bottles & Jugs – with necks/narrow openings (#1 and #2 most accepted)
  • Glass Bottles & Jars – if accepted by the local program (check local recycling guide)
  • Cartons – juice, milk, and soup cartons

Do NOT place these in recycling carts:

  • Plastic bags and film
  • Food-soiled containers
  • Styrofoam
  • Batteries or electronics
  • Garden hoses, ropes, cords
  • Hazardous materials

Tip: Recyclables should be clean, empty, and dry. When in doubt, throw it out—contamination increases processing costs and can cause good recyclables to be landfilled.

For more details, see the Recycling Guide.
