♻️ How to Recycle Properly — SWMD’s Curbside Recycling Rules

Your recycling is handled via a blue recycling cart provided by SWMD. Here’s how to make sure things go smoothly.

What you can put in the blue cart
  • Paper & cardboard: office paper, junk mail, newspapers, magazines, flattened cardboard boxes, paperboard (like cereal boxes).
  • Plastics: plastic bottles and jugs (e.g. water bottles, milk jugs), and certain plastic containers (with accepted resin codes).
  • Glass: bottles and jars (all colors) — but be sure to remove lids.
  • Metal: aluminum cans, tin/steel food cans, empty aerosol cans (with canisters empty and nozzles removed).
Important rules to follow
  • Everything must be clean, empty, and dry. Rinse containers if needed — e.g. food residue, sauces, oils — before recycling.
  • No plastic bags, even if they have recyclables inside — recyclables must go loosely into the cart.
  • Flatten cardboard boxes so they take less space and are easier to process.
  • If you’re not sure whether something is accepted — especially if it's a mixed material (e.g. plastic+metal take-out container) — put it in the trash (brown cart) instead, to avoid “contamination.”
  • Putting bagged recyclables, greasy pizza boxes, plastic film, foam (Styrofoam), or other non-accepted items in the blue cart may lead to the whole load getting rejected — and you might even incur a violation fee.

What About Other Types of Waste? (Bulk, Hazardous, Yard, etc.)

Your weekly garbage and recycling service doesn’t cover everything. Here’s how to handle special items or bulk waste:

  • Bulk items and brush / bulky waste (e.g. furniture, appliances, tree branches, large items): SWMD provides curbside bulky/brush collection twice each year per route. You will receive a door-hanger with your scheduled week. Make sure to place items curbside (not in alley), no more than eight cubic yards and within eight feet of the curb, by 7:00 AM on the Monday of your scheduled week.
  • Household hazardous waste (HHW): Items like paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, batteries, certain chemicals — must not go into your regular trash or recycling carts. Instead, take them to a HHW drop-off center. You’ll usually need a recent utility bill and ID to prove residency.
  • Yard waste / organics (where available): If your area participates in organics/composting collection, green carts may accept food scraps, yard trimmings, and other compostables — but the accepted items, and whether your street participates, can vary.
  • Construction debris, large scrap metal, tires, concrete, etc.: These are not accepted in regular trash or curbside bulky service. For many of these you’ll need to use a private hauler, licensed bulky waste drop-off, or special disposal service.

Why It Matters — Good Recycling & Proper Waste Disposal Benefits Everyone

  • Proper recycling helps divert paper, plastic, metal, and glass from landfill — turning materials into new products instead of wasting resources.
  • Preventing contamination (clean recyclables, no plastic bags, no non-accepted items) helps the city’s recycling program run efficiently and avoid costly rejections.
  • Correct disposal of hazardous materials (chemicals, oils, electronics) keeps harmful waste out of landfills, water systems, and reduces environmental or health risks.
  • Bulk and bulky-item pickup, and special collection events, offer a way to responsibly dispose of large items without overloading the regular trash system.
