Bexar County Approves $19.1 Million Agreement for Flood-Warning Upgrades
Bexar County commissioners approved a $19,068,772 agreement with the San Antonio River Authority on September 15 to advance the countywide NextGen flood-warning system.
The agreement moves the program from preliminary assessment into field implementation, with work planned through December 2027.
Equipment targeted to the highest risks
An engineering assessment identified roughly 1,500 road locations with flood risk, more than the program can monitor individually. Priorities consider previous incidents, water depth, traffic volume and visibility.
Planned improvements include repairs and upgrades to monitoring equipment and cameras. High- and extreme-risk sites are priorities for warning gates where installation is feasible; alternative warning signs would serve locations unsuitable for gates. Additional improvements at moderate-risk locations depend on federal funding.
Better information for emergency response
The work also includes developing a flood-monitoring viewer, strengthening coordination with emergency management and continuing public outreach. The agreement funds an implementation phase; it does not mean all new equipment is installed.
Residents can review the presentation and approval in the September 15 Commissioners Court meeting recording. The NextGen discussion begins about four hours and eight minutes into the meeting.
