Areal Flood Watch Issued for Fort Bend County and Surrounding Areas: Heaviest Rainfall Expected Tuesday Night into Wednesday

June 17 2024

An areal flood watch has been issued on June 17, 2024 at 1:39 PM for several counties including Fort Bend, with the potential threat remaining until June 20, 2024 at 1:00 AM.

The flood watch is in effect from Tuesday evening through late Wednesday night, with possible flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall. The areas covered not only include Fort Bend, but also extend to the Greater Houston Area and several other locations in South Central and Southeast Texas. The intense showers and thunderstorms are believed to be linked to an approaching tropical disturbance in the Western Gulf.

Within the watch area, rainfall between 4-8 inches is anticipated, with some locally higher amounts also being possible. The forecast suggests that the heaviest rainfall will occur between Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon. Given the amount of rain, excessive runoff may lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks, causing potential damage and disruption.

Urban areas and regions with poor drainage are also at high risk of flooding. Residents of Fort Bend and neighboring areas are advised to stay updated on the situation and take the necessary precautions to secure their surroundings.
