Texas State Technical College (TSTC) is set to bolster its offerings with the upcoming launch of its Transportation Center of Excellence on the Fort Bend County campus. The new center, which stands on land once home to a field of native grass, will soon house cutting-edge facilities for automotive technology programs designed to meet the growing demand for skilled workers in the automotive and diesel industries.
As the second-largest employer of automotive body and related repairers in the U.S., Texas is seeing a rapid increase in demand for qualified technicians. Kayla Harden, a recruiter for Christian Brothers Automotive, stresses the urgency of filling this workforce gap.
"The need for skilled technicians is higher than ever, both nationwide and locally,” Harden said. “With the growing complexity of vehicles—especially as hybrid and electric models become more popular—there’s a huge demand for people with advanced diagnostic and technical skills.”

The new Transportation Center of Excellence at TSTC will feature expanded programs in Diesel Equipment Technology, Automotive Technology, and Auto Collision and Management Technology. These programs are designed to align closely with current industry trends and technological advancements, ensuring that students receive the most relevant and up-to-date education.
Harden, a seasoned professional in the automotive field, is enthusiastic about the career prospects that await students in this industry. “Let’s be real — this is a career where you’ll never be bored,” she said. “The industry is always evolving, and there’s always something new to learn, whether it’s the latest in technology or honing your skills.”
The demand for trained automotive professionals in Texas is on the rise. According to onetonline.org, the number of jobs for automotive service technicians and mechanics in the state is forecast to increase by 10% from 2020 to 2030. In the same period, automotive body and related repairer positions are expected to grow by 14%, making this an exciting time for those entering the field.
