'Stop the Bleed' Blood Drive at HCESD48 in Katy: Free Gifts, Life-Saving Skills, and a Chance to Save Lives
On Thursday, May 22, 2025, community members in the Katy area are invited to do more than donate blood—they’ll also gain the tools and training to potentially save a life. Hosted by HCESD48 Fire EMS at 21201 Morton Rd, Katy, TX 77449, the Stop the Bleed Blood Drive runs from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM in honor of National Stop the Bleed Day.
Blood Donations Save Lives—So Can You
Blood donors will be treated like heroes at this event, receiving not only a free tourniquet, but also a free beach towel and a complimentary A1C diabetes screening for their generosity. But more than perks, participants walk away knowing they played a part in saving lives—a single donation can save up to three lives.
In addition to the donation itself, the event features hands-on emergency training by EMS instructors. These professionals will teach the basics of bleeding control—simple, effective techniques that can mean the difference between life and death in an accident or trauma situation.
"Uncontrolled bleeding is a major cause of preventable death in trauma," said Lia Hales with HCESD48 Fire EMS.. “The average person can bleed out in just three to five minutes, often before emergency crews can arrive. That’s why knowing how to respond immediately is so critical.”

Empowering Everyday Heroes
The Stop the Bleed campaign is a national effort that aims to empower bystanders to act quickly in bleeding emergencies. While professional help may take 7–10 minutes to arrive, those on the scene—the average neighbor, coworker, or passerby—can often step in to stop hemorrhaging and dramatically increase survival chances.
The blood drive is organized in partnership with Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, the sole blood provider to Houston and surrounding communities. Operating since 1975 and serving over 170 hospitals, including those in the Texas Medical Center, this nonprofit needs approximately 1,000 blood donations every day to meet demand.
“Every donor is a hero to us,” says Cameron Palmer with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. “The blood you give today is a lifeline for patients undergoing surgery, cancer treatment, trauma care, and more.”
