New Sign at Citizens for Animal Protection to Inspire Pet Adoptions and Raise Awareness

January 09 2025

Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP), a Houston-based nonprofit dedicated to rescuing and rehoming homeless animals, has unveiled a bold new sign designed to catch the attention of thousands of motorists daily. Located off I-10 West near Katy, the vibrant sign stands fifteen feet taller than its predecessor and prominently features CAP’s iconic round logo in red, blue, and black.

Generously donated by the Schwartz family in memory of their beloved cats, Sassy and Punkin, the new sign represents a heartfelt commitment to CAP’s mission. The Schwartz family’s donation ensures the sign will serve as a “beacon of hope” for animals in need, according to CAP Executive Director Sandi Mercado.

“We’re thrilled to unveil our new sign, which is not just taller and more colorful – it’s a symbol of our growing impact in the community,” said Mercado. “It is more than just an upgrade – it will be a lifeline for the animals in our care.”

A Legacy of Giving

The Schwartzes, long-time supporters of CAP, have been instrumental in advancing the organization’s work. Members of the CAP Codicil Club, they have pledged a legacy donation to the shelter and were recently honored with the prestigious Melcher Humanitarian of the Year award during the 2023 Celebrity Paws Gala.

In addition to funding the new sign, the family has also enhanced CAP’s Cornelius Clinic, donating radiograph and ultrasound equipment to support essential veterinary care for animals awaiting adoption.

A Sign to Save Lives

Strategically positioned to attract attention from both eastbound and westbound travelers on Katy Freeway, the sign is expected to amplify CAP’s reach. Its LED screen will display key messages, including adoption events, monthly specials at the CAP Cornelius Clinic, and heartwarming stories of animals looking for their forever homes.

“The increased visibility means more potential adoptions, more volunteers, and greater community engagement,” said Mercado. “This sign is a vital tool in our mission to find loving families for the animals who need us most.”

A Commitment to Animal Welfare

Since its founding in 1972, CAP has been a leader in Houston’s animal welfare community. From sheltering and rehoming pets to providing spay and neuter services, humane education programs, and a fully equipped pet supply shop, CAP works tirelessly to prevent animal cruelty and advocate for the voiceless.

Located at 17555 Katy Freeway, CAP invites the community to visit and learn about its programs, volunteer opportunities, and ways to support the shelter.

A Future of Hope

As the new sign lights up the Katy Freeway, CAP remains steadfast in its mission to save lives and inspire compassion. For families considering pet adoption or looking for ways to support animal welfare, the sign serves as a powerful reminder of the difference a second chance can make.
