Live Exotic Animal Shows Coming to Fort Bend County Libraries as Part of Summer Reading Challenge

May 20 2025

Children in Fort Bend County will have the opportunity to explore the wonders of the animal kingdom this summer when Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) presents The Creature Teacher featuring wildlife educator Richard Urwin and his live exotic animals. These interactive, educational programs are part of FBCL’s 2025 Summer Reading Challenge, themed “Color Our World.”

The Creature Teacher’s summer appearances will offer children an unforgettable learning experience filled with awe-inspiring animals, fun facts, and conservation education. This hands-on journey into the world of wildlife is designed to spark curiosity and deepen understanding of animal habitats, behaviors, and adaptations.

About the Creature Teacher

Richard (Rick) Urwin, owner of The Creature Teacher® in Houston, has spent the last seven years inspiring children through wildlife education. Prior to that, he worked as an environmental scientist in Texas, New Mexico, and Louisiana. His passion for teaching and his love for animals led him back to the Houston area, where he now travels to schools and libraries to promote conservation awareness and animal knowledge.

Far from a typical mobile petting zoo, The Creature Teacher® serves as a hub for interactive education and up-close encounters that leave lasting impressions on young learners.

The Creature Teacher event is part of FBCL’s broader Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages reading among all age groups—from infants to adults. Participants can earn rewards based on the number of books they read or time spent reading, and children can take part in a wide variety of creative and educational programs throughout the summer.

Supported by the Community

These events are made possible by the Friends of the Library organizations that support each branch. Admission is free and open to the public.
