Elyson Dedicates Ted Nelson Memorial Park Near Boudny Elementary, Honoring Developer Who Put Schools and Families First in Katy

In Katy’s growing Elyson community, a new neighborhood park now serves as both a gathering place for families and a tribute to a developer whose vision helped shape the region’s growth for decades.

Ted Nelson Memorial Park, located at the northeast corner of Katy-Hockley Cut-Off Road and Elyson Boulevard, was recently dedicated in honor of Ted Nelson, a longtime community development executive whose leadership influenced some of the Houston area’s most recognized master-planned communities.

Positioned beside Elyson’s newest Katy Independent School District campus, Boudny Elementary, the park reflects the philosophy that guided Nelson’s work for more than four decades: neighborhoods should be designed with families in mind, with schools, parks, and everyday gathering spaces intentionally woven into the community from the beginning.

A Park That Reflects Ted Nelson’s Vision for Family-Centered Communities

During the dedication ceremony attended by family members, colleagues, and community leaders, speakers reflected on Nelson’s enduring influence across Katy and beyond.

“It’s no accident that Ted Nelson Memorial Park is located next to Elyson’s newest Katy ISD school, Boudny Elementary,” said Jennifer Taylor, vice president of sales and marketing for Brookfield Residential.

“You’ll see this kind of thoughtful design throughout Elyson and our other communities, because Ted believed that kids and families should never be far from a park or a school, or a trail that leads to one,” Taylor added while leading the ceremony.

That philosophy helped shape some of the most prominent master-planned communities in the Katy area. Nelson played a leading role in developments including Cinco Ranch, Seven Meadows, Grayson Lakes, and Elyson — neighborhoods that collectively will include more than 23,000 single-family homes and 16 Katy ISD schools once Elyson is fully built out.

His work began influencing Katy’s trajectory in the early 1990s during the launch of Cinco Ranch, a period many local planners say marked a turning point for the region’s long-term growth.

“Ted raised the bar and set the stage for all the development that has occurred in Katy since the earliest planning for Cinco Ranch began in the 1980s,” said Katy-based land planner Kerry Gilbert, who worked closely with Nelson for more than four decades.

A Community Space Designed for Children, Families, and Everyday Life

The park built in Nelson’s name was designed as a place where students, families, and neighbors can gather, play, and connect — a reflection of the community-focused planning approach that defined his career.

Ted Nelson Memorial Park features a playground with a soft mulch surface and a shade structure designed to keep children comfortable during warm Texas weather. Open lawn space allows room for games and gatherings, while nearby walking trails encourage residents to explore the surrounding neighborhood.

Families can enjoy picnics at several tables throughout the park, including a shaded ADA-accessible table. One of the park’s standout features is an enclosed octagonal gaga ball pit, offering children a fast-paced game often described as a kinder, gentler version of dodgeball.

The park also incorporates natural landscaping elements that enhance the outdoor experience throughout the year. Several mature live oak trees provide shade, while newly planted pines, cedar elms, and Shumard oaks contribute to the park’s long-term canopy.

Native grasses and flowering trees — including crepe myrtles and fringe trees — add seasonal color, and a butterfly garden planted with native pollinator species invites visitors to observe nature up close.

A Lasting Tribute in a Community He Helped Create

Across the Houston region, many of today’s master-planned communities trace their origins to the work of Ted Nelson. During his career — including leadership roles with Newland Communities — he helped guide the planning and development of large-scale residential neighborhoods across Texas and the United States.

Colleagues often described Nelson as someone who believed that schools and parks were not amenities to be added later in development plans, but essential elements that should shape the community from the very beginning.

The placement of Ted Nelson Memorial Park beside Boudny Elementary reflects that principle. Designed as a shared space for both residents and students, the park creates a natural connection between education, recreation, and neighborhood life.

For many within Brookfield Residential — particularly those who worked alongside Nelson during their years at Newland — the dedication ceremony offered a moment to reflect on the leadership style that defined him.

He was widely known for his steady approach, strong sense of integrity, and commitment to collaboration. While the communities he helped guide will continue to grow for generations, many say the example he set in how development can prioritize people remains just as important.

Within Elyson, the park now stands as a simple yet meaningful reminder of that legacy — a place where children can play, families can gather, and a community shaped by thoughtful planning continues to grow.

Residents interested in exploring Ted Nelson Memorial Park can find it at the intersection of Katy-Hockley Cut-Off Road and Elyson Boulevard in Katy, within the Elyson master-planned community.
