The Importance of Textile Recycling
Textile waste is a growing environmental concern. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in 2018, the recycling rate for all textiles was 14.7%, with 2.5 million tons recycled. However, landfills still received 11.3 million tons of textile waste, accounting for 7.7% of all municipal solid waste landfilled that year.
The fashion industry's rapid production cycles contribute significantly to this waste. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) reported a more than 50% increase in textile waste between 2000 and 2018, largely due to the rise of fast fashion and limited recycling technologies.
Green City Recycler's Role
Green City Recycler is dedicated to diverting used clothing, shoes, and linens away from landfills. Their mission aligns with KKB's goals of environmental stewardship and community beautification. By providing convenient textile recycling solutions, they help communities achieve their sustainability objectives.

Following a structured recycling process, Green City Recycler collects textiles from designated drop-off locations, sorts them based on condition and material type, and repurposes them in various ways. Usable clothing is donated or resold, while damaged textiles are broken down into fibers that can be reused for insulation, carpet padding, or industrial cleaning materials. By implementing this comprehensive recycling approach, Green City Recycler significantly reduces landfill waste while extending the lifecycle of textile products.
Call to Action
Residents are encouraged to participate in the KKB Trash-Off / DMWT Recycle Event by bringing their unwanted textiles for recycling. This collective effort not only declutters homes but also contributes to a healthier environment by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills.
