Katy Area Chamber of Commerce to Host Katy Area Civics Bee

January 09 2024

The Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, in association with The National Civics Bee and backed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, is thrilled to present the Katy Civics Bee. An initiative designed to foster and acknowledge the civics knowledge of middle school students across the nation, the Civics Bee gives participants a chance to express their thoughts on and solutions for pressing local issues. The Katy Area Civics Bee is one of many National Civics Bee competitions promoted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

At least 100 local middle school students will be given the opportunity to take part in this insightful competition. The initial round consists of an essay competition, where students are invited to submit original 500-word essays. With the essay portal currently open for submissions, all middle school students are encouraged to dive into their understanding of civics, pen their thoughts on local problems, and propose a citizen-centric solution.

Entries will be evaluated on a host of criteria, including understanding of civics, the ability to address opposing viewpoints, the acknowledgement of Founding Principles and Civic Virtues, and the use of primary sources. After careful deliberation, 20 finalists will be selected to proceed to the exciting final round, a live quiz event designed to test the participants' knowledge in civics.

Besides the intellectual stimulation and chance to voice their ideas, participants also stand to gain significant recognition and rewards. Each finalist will receive a certificate, and cash prizes of $500, $250 and $125 will be awarded to the first, second, and third-place winners, respectively. This initiative provides a unique platform for students to shine on a local level, and engage with their community in a meaningful way.

The essay submission deadline has been extended to January 22, 2024 at 11:59 PM. Please submit your child's essay to the Katy Area Chamber of Commerce via US Mail at 814 East Ave., Ste. G, Katy, TX 77493 or email at stacy@katychamber.com. For more details on submission criteria, guidance and rules, please visit katychamber.com/national-civics-bee.

Join the Katy Area Chamber for the LIVE National Civics Bee event on April 2, 2024 starting at 6:00 PM at Morton Ranch High School, located at 21000 Franz Rd, Katy, TX 77449. So, middle school students in Katy, here's your chance to make a difference in your community and shine on a grand stage. Let's promote knowledge, civic participation, and celebrate our shared civic pride at the Katy Civics Bee!
