Experience Early Texas Life at the 38th Annual Katy ISD Folk Life Festival
Step back in time and experience early Texas life at the 38th annual Katy ISD Folk Life Festival, slated for Saturday, April 6 from 10 AM to 3 PM. Held at the Kenneth D. Welch Outdoor Learning Center, this unique day-long festival promises to provide deep insights into the lives, skills, and culture of Texas pioneers.
Visitors can anticipate a wide range of presentations and demonstrations that transport them back to the late 1800s. Highlights include Texas Pioneer soldier reenactments offering a glimpse into the militaristic side of early Texan life, and a blacksmith demonstration that shows the vital role this trade played in everyday pioneer life.
For those interested in traditional crafts, there will be demonstrations in quilting, spinning, and weaving. Get up close with farm animals and enjoy a captivating display of honeybee keeping. The festival will also feature a one-room schoolhouse, where children can get a feel for pioneer-era schooling.
A Texas cowboy camp, tin punching, pioneer games, corn shelling/grinding, and rag doll making also form part of the expansive program. To round it off, a unique showcase of Native American culture promises to be a highlight of the day.
As part of the experience, visitors are encouraged to explore the Outdoor Learning Center (OLC). Stroll through nature trails, visit the ponds, and delve into the exhibits in the science and history classrooms. The OLC is conveniently located west of the Katy ISD Education Support Complex at 6301 South Stadium Ln., Katy, TX 77494.
The festival will also include concessions provided by Chick-fil-A in Katy Mills. From historical reenactments to nature walks and craft demonstrations, the Katy ISD Folk Life Festival promises a fun and educational day out for the whole family.
