51 Katy ISD Students Earn TMEA All-State Honors, Among Top 3% of Student Musicians in Texas
For 51 Katy ISD students, years of practice rooms, auditions and rehearsals culminated this month on one of the most respected stages in student music performance.
The students earned the 2026 All-State Musician designation through the Texas Music Education Association (TMEA) and performed at the TMEA Clinic/Convention in San Antonio — the premier music education event in Texas. Ahead of its February regular meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees formally recognized the students for achieving the highest honor available to high school musicians in the state.
In a district known for academic and extracurricular excellence, the accomplishment highlights both individual achievement and the continued strength of Katy ISD’s fine arts programs.
What It Takes to Earn TMEA All-State
The road to becoming a Texas All-State musician is highly competitive.
Each year, more than 70,000 student musicians across Texas begin the audition process. Students advance through multiple rounds of evaluation at the region and area levels before final selections are made. Fewer than three percent ultimately earn a seat in an All-State ensemble.
Those selected perform in elite band, choir or orchestra groups at the annual TMEA Clinic/Convention, an event that draws thousands of music educators, administrators and attendees from across Texas and beyond.
“This achievement places these students among the very best young musicians in Texas,” said Damon Archer, Katy ISD Executive Director of Fine Arts. “Their artistry, discipline and commitment reflect the strength of Katy ISD fine arts and the extraordinary support of our directors, campuses and families. We are incredibly proud of how they represented our District on the state’s premier stage.”

A Milestone Years in the Making
For many students, the All-State designation represents more than a single performance. It reflects sustained musical training, daily rehearsal commitments and the ability to balance rigorous academics with artistic development.
District leaders and trustees also recognized the work of Katy ISD fine arts educators and campus administrators who guide students through the demanding audition process. Preparing for All-State requires precision, resilience and repeated performance under pressure — skills that extend beyond music.
Katy ISD consistently ranks among Texas school districts with the highest number of All-State selections across band, choir and orchestra. The 2026 group continues that tradition.
The Broader Impact of Fine Arts in Katy ISD
The Texas Music Education Association is one of the largest music educator organizations in the country, and its annual convention serves as both a professional learning conference and a showcase of the state’s top student performers.
For families in Katy, strong fine arts programs are part of what defines the district experience. Participation in band, choir and orchestra often begins in middle school and builds toward opportunities like All-State recognition in high school.

As they return from San Antonio, they bring back more than recognition — they bring experience performing at the highest level of Texas high school music.
For Katy ISD, that standard of excellence continues to resonate.
