Warner Elementary Students Win Name That Book District Title
Warner Elementary School won the annual Name That Book competition, held March 28 at the Berry Center.
The winning team, coached by Warner Librarian Julie Lenk, was comprised of fifth grade students Sofia Arbelaez, Chaytrika Kollu, Bairui Li, Sri Magathala, Skylar Ruzic and Amelia Withers. Warner answered nine out of 10 questions correctly to claim Warner’s first-ever district Name That Book championship.
“Winning the district Name That Book title has been a dream of mine since I first become a librarian 20 years ago,” Lenk said. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would happen during Warner’s first year of participating! Amelia, Skylar, Sri, Sofia, Chaytrika and Bairui are amazing students. They worked beautifully together as teammates. They encouraged one another and held each other accountable for their individual reading assignments that they assigned to each other. They put in countless hours of practice, not to mention reading. Needless to say, these young ladies blew me away! They far surpassed my expectations. Congratulations to these Warner Wolves. What a great way to conclude your elementary years!”
The competition began with a regional format, with 36 teams from throughout the district facing a series of questions giving clues about different books and being asked to “Name That Book.” Birkes, Hamilton, Jowell, Kirk, Millsap and Warner elementary schools were named regional champions and moved to the Name That Book finals.
The mission of the Name That Book program is to foster lifelong reading by all third, fourth and fifth grade students. The students are provided a list of books and are encouraged to read as many as possible before the program culminates with a series of competitions to celebrate the students’ knowledge of the books on the list.
Roy Garcia, chief officer for school leadership, was the official “Clue Caller” during the finals competition. Judges included Dr. Linda Macias, chief academic officer; Dr. Heather Bergman, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction; Jenifer Jones, coordinator for elementary reading, language arts and social studies; and Melissa Anthony, Wells Elementary School librarian. The timekeeper was Todd Sepulveda, director of instructional technology. The microphone specialist was Jennifer Garstecki, coordinator of library services.
