Cy-Fair CERT Opens Registration for Spring 2026 Emergency Preparedness Training at Lone Star College–Cy-Fair

West Houston / Cypress  /  West Houston / Cypress
March 10 2026

When disasters strike—whether a hurricane, severe storm, or neighborhood emergency—help doesn’t always arrive immediately. In many cases, the first person on the scene isn’t a firefighter or paramedic, but a neighbor. Across the Cypress and greater Cy-Fair area, residents are once again being invited to step into that role through the Spring 2026 Cy-Fair Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program, now accepting registrations with only a few spots remaining.

The free training course begins Tuesday, March 17, with weekly evening classes held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Lone Star College–Cy-Fair Emergency Services Education Center, located at 19015 West Rd, Cypress, TX 77433. Designed for adults who want to be better prepared for emergencies, the program teaches practical disaster response skills that can make a critical difference in the moments before professional responders arrive.

For many residents, it’s an opportunity not just to learn life-saving skills—but to strengthen the resilience of the entire community.

Preparing Everyday Neighbors for Extraordinary Moments

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program, originally developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), trains volunteers to assist during disasters when emergency services may be delayed or overwhelmed. Participants gain hands-on experience in areas such as:

  • Disaster preparedness
  • Basic emergency medical care and triage
  • Fire safety and small fire suppression
  • Light search and rescue
  • Disaster psychology and team organization

The goal is simple but powerful: empower ordinary citizens to safely assist others during the critical early hours of a crisis.

Cy-Fair CERT has been active in the region since 2007, helping train hundreds of volunteers from neighborhoods throughout northwest Harris County. Participants often come from communities such as Towne Lake, Bridgeland, Fairfield, Coles Crossing, Bear Creek, and Copperfield, where trained residents can play a vital role in disaster response.

Why CERT Training Matters in the Cy-Fair Area

The Houston region’s vulnerability to severe weather events—from hurricanes to flooding—has reinforced the importance of community-level preparedness. During large-scale disasters, emergency call centers and response units can quickly become overwhelmed.

Events like Hurricane Harvey in 2017, which inundated much of the Houston area, highlighted how critical trained community volunteers can be when official resources are stretched thin. CERT programs help bridge the gap between the onset of an emergency and the arrival of professional responders.

By teaching residents how to stay calm, assess hazards, provide basic medical care, and organize safely, CERT programs build what emergency planners call “community resilience”—the ability of neighborhoods to recover more quickly from disasters.

What Participants Can Expect from the Training

The Spring 2026 Cy-Fair CERT class offers a structured, hands-on curriculum led by experienced instructors that often include local firefighters, emergency medical professionals, HAM radio specialists, and veteran CERT volunteers.

Participants typically receive training materials and hands-on instruction that culminates in a realistic disaster simulation exercise where trainees apply the skills they’ve learned.

The program is designed to be accessible to anyone willing to commit to the training schedule. No prior emergency experience, medical background, or special physical abilities are required—just a willingness to learn and work as part of a team.

A Small Commitment with a Big Community Impact

For many volunteers, the experience becomes more than a class—it becomes a way to give back. CERT graduates frequently go on to support community safety events, assist neighbors during emergencies, and volunteer with organizations such as the American Red Cross, Medical Reserve Corps, or local emergency management groups.

The training also builds something less tangible but equally important: relationships between neighbors who are ready to help one another when it matters most.

With classes limited and only a few spots remaining for the Spring 2026 session, organizers encourage residents interested in emergency preparedness to register soon.
