Local Agencies Empower Small-Business Owners with Essential Resources to Boost Business Success
Riding the wave of the many community-centered initiatives spearheaded by Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones, Harris County Precinct 4 is fostering growth and support for local small businesses by providing beneficial resources and expert advice.
Recently, the precinct organized a Small Business Meetup at the Tracy Gee Community Center. In partnership with local organizations including the Houston District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the Women’s Business Center of the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce, and the Fort Bend County Small Business Development Center, this initiative aimed to empower both existing and potential business owners. This is of particular significance for minority and women-owned businesses, as noted by bakery owner, Lesly Angulo.
“I’m Latin American and a single mother, so sometimes when you are trying to find certain resources, it can be difficult,” Angulo said. “So, when I found this, I knew I’d found a great opportunity. I also told a friend of mine that if they weren’t able to make it, I would pass on to them any information I find.”
This meetup is a part of Precinct 4's innovative efforts to bolster local small businesses. Led by Commissioner Lesley Briones, Precinct 4 has created an economic development team, geared towards ensuring that every business within its jurisdiction has access to the support, tools, and resources necessary for thriving in today's dynamic marketplace. The meetups provide current and future business owners with practical tools needed to establish business plans, secure financial backing, and broaden their professional horizons.
Tim Jeffcoat, director of the SBA's Houston District, highlighted the crucial role of networking amongst small-business owners, noting that attendees at the meetup were "as passionate about talking to each other as they are about talking to us."
Delighted by this collaboration, Shayla White Bowden, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director of the Women’s Business Center, expressed her enthusiasm in this partnership with Commissioner Briones' team. She noted that this alliance has the potential to drive economic development in the region by equipping small businesses and entrepreneurs with essential tools, resources, and information that could transform their business operations. This includes contracting, purchasing with Harris County, and participating in educational and business workshops.
Looking forward, the precinct has scheduled the next Small Business Meetup for Friday, Dec. 15, at the Radack Community Center located at 18650 Clay Road in Houston. This presents a fantastic opportunity for interested individuals to further gather information, make valuable connections, and heighten their business acumen. Make sure to secure your spot at https://MeetupDec15.eventbrite.com, to become a part of this empowering community.
