Cypress Falls High School Choir Earns First Place at Houston Madrigal Festival, Elevating Cy-Fair ISD’s Growing Fine Arts Legacy

For families across Cypress and the broader Cy-Fair ISD community, student success often shows up in classrooms, on athletic fields—and increasingly, on stages where talent meets discipline. This month, Cypress Falls High School added another point of pride, with its chamber choir earning first place at the prestigious American Classic Madrigal & Chamber Choir Festival in Houston.

The March 7 competition, held at The Foundry Church, brought together high-performing choirs from across Texas. Cypress Falls didn’t just compete—they led, securing the top honor in the Chamber Division and earning designation as the 2027 Honor Choir, a distinction that will place them center stage at next year’s festival.

For local families, this achievement reflects more than a single performance—it highlights the strength of fine arts education in Cy-Fair ISD and the growing opportunities available to students pursuing music at a high level.

A Moment Years in the Making for Cypress Falls Students

Behind the recognition is a story familiar to many in the community: long rehearsals, early mornings, and a shared commitment to something bigger than any one student.

“I am incredibly proud of the musicianship, dedication and teamwork these students demonstrated throughout this journey,” said Matthew Perez, Cypress Falls head choir director. “They approached the process with focus, trust in one another and a genuine commitment to making great music together.”

Perez emphasized that the win represents not just technical excellence, but a culture of collaboration within the program.

“Seeing that work culminate in Cypress Falls being named the 2026 winners of the Houston Madrigal Festival Competition of American Classic was a truly special moment and a reflection of the remarkable students have in this program.”

What Makes the Houston Madrigal Festival So Competitive?

The Houston Madrigal & Chamber Choir Festival, part of American Classic Tours & Music Festivals, is widely recognized as a flagship event in student choral performance. It blends competition with education, offering students both adjudicated performances and live feedback from nationally respected clinicians.

Each ensemble performs three selections within a timed performance, evaluated by a panel of expert judges who provide detailed commentary and rankings. The festival also includes post-performance clinics, where students receive direct instruction from university-level choral conductors—an experience that elevates both skill and confidence.

Adjudicators and clinicians often include leaders in music education and performance, such as experienced university directors and nationally recognized conductors, reinforcing the event’s reputation as a high-level learning environment.

Top-performing groups receive placement awards, while select ensembles earn additional honors like “Performance of Distinction.” Only one choir per school may compete in each division, raising the stakes and ensuring a high level of competition.

Cy-Fair ISD Choir Programs Continue to Shine

Cypress Falls wasn’t the only Cy-Fair ISD program to stand out this season. Choirs from Bridgeland, Cypress Creek, Cy-Fair, Cypress Lakes, Cypress Park, Cypress Ranch, Cypress Woods, Jersey Village, and Langham Creek high schools all earned superior ratings at a related San Antonio competition—an indicator of consistent excellence across the district.

Several chamber choirs, including those from Bridgeland, Cypress Creek, Cy-Fair, Cypress Lakes, Cypress Ranch, and Jersey Village, also received Performance of Distinction awards, further reinforcing Cy-Fair ISD’s growing reputation in Texas fine arts education.

For many students, these experiences go beyond competition.

“The Madrigal Festival offers a unique opportunity for students to learn and experience advanced music performed at a high level,” said Mica Bull, Cy-Fair head choir director. “Singing in a chamber choir, rather than a large mixed ensemble, challenges students to take greater ownership and responsibility for their individual roles.”

Bull also pointed to the collaborative nature of the trip, where students connected with peers outside their district.

“One highlight of the weekend was visited a San Antonio high school without a chamber choir, where we shared music and joined together to learn and perform a song purely for the joy of singing.”

Why This Matters for Cypress and Cy-Fair Communities

Achievements like this carry weight beyond awards ceremonies. For homeowners, families, and future students in Cypress and surrounding neighborhoods, strong fine arts programs contribute to:

  • Well-rounded student development
  • Increased student engagement and academic success
  • Enhanced school reputation and community pride
  • Long-term property value stability tied to strong schools

In a region experiencing continued growth, these programs help define the identity of local schools—not just as places of learning, but as hubs of creativity and opportunity.

What Comes Next for Cypress Falls Choir

As the newly named 2027 Honor Choir, Cypress Falls High School will return to the Houston Madrigal Festival next year in a featured performance role—an opportunity that places them among the top student ensembles in the region.

For current students, it’s a chance to build on momentum. For incoming students and families, it’s a glimpse into what’s possible within Cy-Fair ISD’s fine arts programs.

And for the broader community, it’s another reminder that some of the most meaningful achievements aren’t always measured in points or scores—but in the moments where preparation, passion, and teamwork come together in harmony.
