Houston Firefighter and Community Leader Robert Blumrick Receives Fire Safety Medal from Sons of the American Revolution

October 22 2025

Surrounded by friends, family, and fellow first responders, Robert A. Blumrick, Vice President of Harris County MUD 163 and retired firefighter from the Houston Fire Department, was honored with the Fire Safety Commendation Medal and Certificate by the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Robert Rankin Chapter.

The recognition ceremony took place on October 8 at the Spring Creek Barbecue off the Katy Freeway, where members of the SAR chapter gathered for their monthly meeting. Representing generations of community service and dedication to public safety, the event was a heartfelt nod to Blumrick’s 33-year career with the Houston Fire Department and his ongoing civic engagement.

The Sons of the American Revolution is a patriotic organization dedicated to honoring Revolutionary War ancestors and inspiring future generations by promoting the values upon which the nation was founded — patriotism, civic duty, and community service. Through awards like the Fire Safety Commendation Medal, SAR chapters across the country recognize individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to public safety and emergency services.

A Lifetime of Service to the Community

Blumrick’s fire service journey began in 1980 and spanned over three decades until his retirement in 2013. During that time, he held numerous certifications and leadership roles, including Texas Certified Master Firefighter, Licensed Paramedic, EMS Preceptor, Acting Captain at Houston Fire Station 49, and Fire Instructor.

His contributions in the field are too many to count — quite literally. In a recent exchange with SAR representatives, Blumrick estimated that he trained at least 15 EMTs one-on-one in the field and responded to thousands of fire and EMS calls.

Among his more memorable moments was the response to the massive Faroy Candle factory fire on West Belt in 1982. "I remember seeing firefighters slipping on the wet paraffin that had melted and run out of those overhead doors into the parking lot area. When it hardened, it was extremely slippery!" he recalled.

Blumrick also played a critical role in saving lives, including the resuscitation of a woman who had gone into cardiac arrest while driving near Bear Creek Park — a reminder of the life-and-death stakes that come with the uniform.

Beyond the firehouse, Blumrick earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Fire Science Technology and Safety from Lone Star College, graduating magna cum laude. His leadership extended into local governance as well, serving multiple terms on the Harris County MUD 163 Board of Directors. Harris County MUD 163 serves multiple villages within the Copperfield community.

Recognized by Community Leaders and Peers

The award presentation was attended by several local figures including SAR chapter president Tom Jackson, HCESD 48 Captain JaNae Breda (Community Risk Reduction/PIO), and EMS of the Year honoree Marina Rolon. A group photo taken at the ceremony captured the spirit of the moment, with Blumrick and his wife standing proudly among fellow public servants.

“It was a privilege to honor Robert not just for his service record, but for the character and commitment he’s shown over the years,” said Tom Jackson, a longtime civic leader and SAR member. “His story is a powerful example of what it means to serve your community.”

Preserving History While Honoring Heroes

The Sons of the American Revolution continues to champion community values through civic recognition and historical preservation. Local chapters like Robert Rankin in Katy work to foster awareness and appreciation for the principles that shaped the nation while shining a light on those who uphold them today.

Blumrick’s recognition not only honors his personal legacy but also serves as a reminder of the quiet courage and relentless dedication exhibited by firefighters and first responders across the region. From training the next generation of EMTs to answering 20-plus calls a shift, his career reflects the very best of public service.

For residents in Katy and across the Greater Houston area, the story of Robert A. Blumrick is more than just a highlight — it's a legacy worth remembering.
