As summer approaches, teens in the Katy area are on the lookout for meaningful ways to earn money and build independence. One of the most rewarding options? Babysitting. To ensure young teens are truly ready to take on the responsibility of caring for children, Harris County ESD 48 Fire Department is offering FREE Safe Sitter® classes— a nationally recognized training program designed to teach the fundamentals of babysitting and emergency care.
For both teens and their parents, this is a win-win: teens gain real-world skills, and parents gain confidence knowing their children are prepared to safely care for siblings or neighbors.
Why Babysitting Is the Perfect Summer Job for Teens
Babysitting is more than just a convenient summer gig — it teaches responsibility, time management, and decision-making. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, babysitting is among the top first jobs for teens, and youth employment in the summer typically rises by more than 2 million nationwide.
But with great responsibility comes the need for proper training. That’s where Safe Sitter® steps in.
What Is the Safe Sitter® Program?
Safe Sitter® is a national, medically accurate training program that teaches teens how to safely and confidently care for younger children. The program was developed by a pediatrician and has been offered nationwide for over 40 years.
In Katy, Harris County ESD 48 Fire Department hosts Safe Sitter classes at 21201 Morton Road, offering a hands-on, interactive experience designed for young teens who want to start babysitting, care for siblings, or earn First Aid and Babysitting Badges for scouting programs.
