Cypress Woods Baseball Wins Region Title, Advance to State Tournament

June 05 2023

The Cypress Woods High School baseball team won the Region II-6A championship on June 2, qualifying for the UIL Baseball State Tournament for the first time in program history. The Wildcats are the third different CFISD team to advance to the Class 6A tournament since 2012.

Cypress Woods defeated The Woodlands in a best-of-three series by the scores of 5-4 and 8-0, respectively, to win the regional championship.

“It’s been awesome,” said Philip Schwarz, Cypress Woods head baseball coach. “It’s awesome to look up in the stands and see it packed. When we score runs or something great happens, the crowd goes crazy and you have all those people supporting us. It brings us a lot of energy on the field, a lot of excitement and it’s really helped us throughout this playoff run.”

The Wildcats (38-4) will face Flower Mound (35-10-2) in the first Class 6A semifinal, to be held at 4 p.m. on June 9 at Dell Diamond (3400 E. Palm Valley Blvd.) in Round Rock. Cypress Woods is the designated home team.

Cypress Woods High School senior Tristan Russell celebrates during the Wildcats’ opening game against The Woodlands in the Region II-6A final on June 1. The Wildcats swept the best-of-three series to advance to the UIL Baseball State Tournament.

Austin Westlake (40-4) and Pearland (37-6-1) will meet in the second semifinal. The two semifinal winners will advance and play in the Class 6A championship game at 4 p.m. on June 10.

Tickets will be $15 apiece (adults and students) for one day or $40 each for an all-tournament pass. On game days, the ticket office will be open one hour before the first game (8 a.m. on Friday and Saturday). Tickets will also be available for purchase online for both Friday and Saturday

Parking will be available at Dell Diamond for $10 per car. A clear bag policy for the tournament is in place.

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) will provide live webcasts of the state tournament. Those unable to attend can watch live online with a subscription. Subscribers can also watch on the go by downloading the NFHS Network app.

Cypress Woods is the third CFISD baseball team to reach the state tournament since 2012, joining Cypress Ranch (2012, 2015 and 2018) and Langham Creek (2016). Cypress Ranch won titles in 2012 and 2015, while Cy-Fair High School won the Class 5A state championship in 2007.

“We have a really solid group of guys and a lot of talent,” Cypress Woods senior outfielder Brady Sullivan said. “I played with a few guys as far back as little league. It’s cool to be able to do this for so long, have that chemistry and try to bring home a state championship.”
