Cypress Scouts Extend a Helping Hand with Compassion Bags Donation
In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Yen McAlister, Cubmaster for Pack 1533 in Cypress, recently collaborated with Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM) to donate 100 compassion bags filled with non-perishable foods and water. This initiative, driven by the Scouts of Pack 1533, reflects their commitment to making a positive impact on the community.
McAlister, also the incoming Scouting for Food Chair for Big Cypress District, reached out to CAM's marketing director to propose the idea of contributing compassion bags. Having worked with CAM in the past through Big Cypress Scouting for Food, McAlister recognized the organization's capacity to collect and efficiently distribute the donated items.
The scouts of Pack 1533 enthusiastically embraced the project, and during their monthly Pack Meeting, they gathered to assemble and box the compassion bags. Every item included in the bags was generously donated by the scouts themselves, showcasing their dedication to serving those in need.
"This is such a wonderful example of the community coming together to help our most vulnerable neighbors. Coming together really makes a difference," Said Martha Burnes, Executive Director of Cypress Assistance Ministries.
Following the bag assembly on November 16, McAlister personally delivered the compassion bags to CAM on November 18. The coordination involved email correspondence with CAM's marketing director and Henry Lombraña, CAM's food pantry director, ensuring a seamless process from collection to delivery.
These compassion bags, a symbol of the Scouts' commitment to community service, are now being distributed to individuals seeking food assistance at Cypress Assistance Ministries. CAM serves individuals and families in financial crisis, those on the brink of homelessness, the elderly, the unemployed and anyone that needs hope for a better future in the Cypress area. After feeding a total of 17,333 through CAM's food pantry in 2022, CAM has seen a sharp uptick in community members seeking assistance from the food pantry this year.
This endeavor exemplifies the Scout motto, embodying the old adage in scouting that "many hands make light work." As McAlister steps into the role of Scouting for Food Chair, the collaboration with CAM is expected to deepen, fostering continued support for the community in the upcoming months.
