College Knowledge Night Draws Record Crowd to Berry Center

February 10 2023

CFISD’s office of advanced academics welcomed more than 3,800 visitors to its College Knowledge Night on Jan. 31 at the Berry Center.

The event was open to current CFISD eighth through 11th grade students and started with a college fair featuring a number of colleges and universities most frequently attended by district graduates. The record crowd was more than four times the number from past events.

Representatives from the Wilson Elementary School scholarship program visit with families at the College Knowledge Night, held Jan. 31 at the Berry Center. In addition to a college fair and information sessions, participating eighth through 11th grade students were able to visit with local organizations and CFISD elementary schools that provide scholarship opportunities.

After the fair, students and families were invited to attend numerous sessions covering multiple college topics, including advanced placement and dual credit courses, the College Academy, first-generation students and the NCAA for those hoping to compete in collegiate athletics.

Jersey Village High School alumnus Joseph Flores also offered a special presentation, sharing his experience through a non-traditional pathway to higher education. Following his high school graduation in 2019, Flores attended and graduated from both Lone Star College—CyFair and Rice University.

The event also included representatives from organizations such as the Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union and CFISD elementary schools that provide scholarship opportunities specifically offered to seniors who are alumni from those campuses.

“We are so appreciative of the overwhelming participation of the CFISD community and their response to the event and thank the attendees for their consideration to the presenters and the college representatives,” said Nickie Kennedy, advanced academics coach. “We are already making plans for next year and look forward to continuing to promote college and career readiness throughout the district.”
