Harris County Precinct 4 Launches Crosswalks 4 Precinct 4 to Improve School Zone Safety Across West Harris County
While students across West Harris County enjoy winter break, Harris County Precinct 4 crews are using the quieter weeks to focus on a project designed to make everyday routines safer once classes resume.
Commissioner Lesley Briones has launched Crosswalks 4 Precinct 4, a public safety and infrastructure maintenance initiative that focuses on repainting crosswalks, curbs, stop bars, and turn arrows near schools throughout the precinct. The work is underway at more than 20 school-area locations across Alief ISD, Cy-Fair ISD, Katy ISD, Tomball ISD, and Waller ISD, with crews aiming to complete improvements before students return to campuses in January.
“What this initiative is, is our Precinct 4 Road and Bridge crew will be repainting and making 20 crosswalks across Precinct 4 safer,” Briones said. “These are 20 crosswalks that our kids use every day to walk to school, that families use to get to the nearest park, to their place of worship, to the nearest bus stop, to get to work.”
County officials say faded striping and worn roadway markings can reduce visibility for drivers, particularly in busy school zones. By refreshing these markings now, the county hopes to improve awareness and reduce risk for students who walk or bike to school, as well as for parents and neighbors navigating school-area traffic.

Public safety has been a consistent focus for Briones, who has often spoken about infrastructure through the lens of family and community. “Safety is my top priority, and as a mother of three and as a former teacher myself, I'm so happy that my team and I can double down, take action to keep our families safe,” she said.
Schools Receiving Crosswalk Safety Improvements
As part of the Crosswalks 4 Precinct 4 initiative, roadway crews are repainting crosswalks and traffic markings near 21 school-area locations across five school districts, ensuring safer routes for students and families before classes resume.

The improvements include refreshed crosswalk striping, stop bars, directional arrows, and curb markings in areas that see daily foot traffic from students and families. Winter break provides an opportunity for crews to complete the work efficiently while minimizing disruption near campuses.
County leaders note that routine maintenance like this plays an important role in keeping neighborhoods safe, particularly as traffic patterns continue to evolve in fast-growing parts of West Harris County.
