Katy ISD Students Earn 27 National Merit Scholarships, Joining Nation’s Top Young Scholars

As families across Katy ISD celebrate graduation season and prepare for the next chapter, 27 graduating seniors are receiving national recognition for years of hard work, academic achievement and dedication in the classroom.

Katy ISD announced that 27 seniors from six district high schools have earned prestigious college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships through the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program, placing them among the nation’s top academic performers and reinforcing the district’s reputation for educational excellence.

The scholarship recipients represent Cinco Ranch High School, Jordan High School, Katy High School, Seven Lakes High School, Taylor High School and Tompkins High School. Their achievements reflect not only individual commitment and perseverance but also the strong academic culture that has become a hallmark of Katy ISD.

A National Honor Earned by Fewer Than One Percent of Students

The National Merit Scholarship Program is one of the most competitive academic recognition programs in the United States. Students begin the process by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) during their junior year of high school.

More than 1.3 million students nationwide entered the competition. According to Katy ISD, fewer than one percent advanced to semifinalist standing. Those who became finalists completed an extensive application process that included academic performance, leadership experiences, extracurricular involvement, recommendations and standardized test scores.

From that highly selective group, colleges and universities across the country chose students to receive college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships.

“College-Sponsored National Merit Scholars exemplify academic excellence, perseverance and intellectual curiosity,” said Katy ISD Chief Academic Officer Christine Caskey. “Earning a scholarship of this caliber is an extraordinary achievement that reflects years of academic dedication. We are incredibly proud of these students and look forward to the impact they will make in college and beyond.”

Why This Matters for Katy ISD Families

Academic recognitions like the National Merit Scholarship Program often serve as indicators of the strength of a school district’s educational opportunities, student support systems and college readiness initiatives.

For Katy-area families, the success of these students reflects the district’s continued emphasis on rigorous academics, advanced coursework, leadership development and preparation for higher education. The achievement also highlights the opportunities available to students across multiple campuses throughout Katy ISD.

As communities evaluate schools, educational outcomes and future opportunities for students, national recognitions such as these help demonstrate the district’s ability to prepare graduates for success at some of the nation's leading colleges and universities.
