Amazing Place Expands to Katy with $3 Million Grant from The Hamill Foundation

February 28 2025

Amazing Place, a leading nonprofit dedicated to supporting families impacted by dementia and promoting brain health education, is expanding its footprint with a second location in Katy. This expansion is made possible by a historic $3 million grant from The Hamill Foundation, marking the largest donation in the organization’s nearly 30-year history. In recognition of this extraordinary generosity, the new facility will be named The Hamill Foundation Campus.

Set to open in late spring, Amazing Place West will be a 19,000-square-foot facility located off I-10 and Fry Road in Katy, serving as a vital resource for individuals diagnosed with mild to moderate dementia, their caregivers, and those seeking to maintain cognitive function through a brain-healthy lifestyle. This expansion is expected to double the number of individuals the nonprofit serves annually in the greater Houston area.

A Legacy of Care and Connection

Amazing Place began as The Senior’s Place in 1996, operating from two converted classrooms at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dean Robinson. Over the decades, the organization has grown into a widely respected center for dementia care and brain health education, working in collaboration with major medical institutions and dementia support organizations.

“We are not just talking about memory loss—we are facing it head-on,” said Ramsey Howell, Development Director with Amazing Place. “Through our programs, we encourage active and independent lifestyles, educate and support family caregivers, and provide essential knowledge and resources to health professionals and the community.”

A Hub for Dementia Care and Brain Health

Amazing Place West will offer a comprehensive range of services, including:

  • Day Programs: Structured activities for individuals with mild to moderate dementia, providing social engagement and cognitive stimulation.

  • Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST): The only nonprofit in the region currently offering CST for those with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), a condition that can lead to dementia.

  • Caregiver Support: Classes, counseling, and community gatherings designed to equip caregivers with knowledge, strategies, and emotional support.

  • Brain Health Education: Free or low-cost presentations and workshops on dementia prevention, memory preservation, and healthy aging.

  • State-of-the-Art Facilities: The new campus will include a family conference room, a therapeutic art studio, a Memory Preservation Nutrition™ kitchen, a library, and a healing garden, among other amenities.

According to the National Institute on Aging, dementia affects millions of Americans, and early interventions—such as cognitive exercises, social engagement, and a brain-healthy diet—can play a critical role in slowing cognitive decline. Additionally, the Alzheimer’s Association reports that up to 45% of dementia cases could be prevented through proactive lifestyle changes, reinforcing the importance of Amazing Place’s mission.

A Transformational Gift from The Hamill Foundation

The Hamill Foundation, which provides grants for educational, scientific, charitable, and religious activities in the Houston area, has been instrumental in enabling Amazing Place to extend its reach.

“There are no words to express how meaningful this gift is to Amazing Place,” said Tracey Brown, Executive Director of Amazing Place. “Our greater Houston community is the real beneficiary, as the services we provide our region’s aging population fill a significant gap of much-needed support. We are beyond grateful to The Hamill Foundation and are proud to name our new campus in their honor.”

Tom Brown, longtime Grants Director at The Hamill Foundation, echoed this sentiment: “Alzheimer’s and dementia affect families in every part of the Houston area. We are delighted to help Amazing Place expand to Katy and west Houston.”

Bringing Support Closer to Home

The expansion into Katy is a homecoming of sorts for Amazing Place, as its founder, Rev. Dean Robinson, grew up in the area. This strategic location will allow the nonprofit to better serve the growing population in west Houston, an area with increasing demand for dementia support services and brain health education.

By providing faith-based engagement, caregiver resources, and cutting-edge brain health initiatives, the organization is not just coping with memory loss—it aims to actively working to change the trajectory of cognitive aging in Houston and beyond.
