Nearly 200 Volunteers Participate in 2022 Bus Buddies Program

September 06 2022

A total of 180 community volunteers assisted CFISD bus riders in safely reaching their proper drop-off points as part of the CFISD Bus Buddies program, Aug. 22-23.

Bus Buddies rode CFISD school buses from 2:45-5 p.m. on the first two days of school, assisting bus drivers as they transport students home. Nearly 275 routes were covered by volunteers, while all but four elementary schools had at least one registered Bus Buddy.

“Being a Bus Buddy is a very special way to support our school district on the first few days of school,” said Julie Hinaman, Board of Trustees vice president, who volunteered at Duryea, Holmsley and Lowery elementary schools. “We get to ride with our bus drivers and support our littlest learners as they get off the bus, making sure they get off at the right stop and that they’ve ended their day in a great way.”

Added Board of Trustees President Tom Jackson, who volunteered at Fiest Elementary School: “One of the nice things about being a Bus Buddy is you give reassurance to the students who are brand new to riding that bus.”

In addition to community volunteers, 56 businesses, organizations and departments participated in the program. The following partners came together to establish another successful year:

“Our Bus Buddy volunteers continue to bring out the best in our community,” said Dawn Tryon, CFISD director of community engagement. “It’s a joy to see community volunteers connect with students and our dedicated bus drivers to help ensure our youngest students arrive home safely. Join us next year by serving as a Bus Buddy for one of our 57 elementary campuses. Your smile and presence are simply the best!”
