1. Start Early: Sort and Declutter

The key to a successful garage sale is preparation. Start by going through your belongings—clothes, toys, home decor, and furniture. Ask yourself what you really use and love. If something hasn’t seen the light of day in the past year, it might be time to let it go. Gather items you no longer need and set them aside for the sale.

2. Clean and Organize Your Items

Presentation matters! Clean your items and organize them neatly. Group similar items together, like kitchenware, toys, or books. Use tables or blankets to display them attractively. A well-organized setup not only makes it easier for shoppers but also helps your items stand out.

3. Set Reasonable Prices

Pricing can be tricky. Remember, garage sales are all about giving things a new home rather than making a fortune. Price items fairly to encourage sales—generally, you can aim for about 25% of the original retail price for used items. Consider using stickers for easy pricing, and be open to negotiating with buyers!

4. Advertise Your Sale

Spread the word! Share your participation in the garage sale on social media, community boards, and local online groups. Your friends at My Neighborhood News have posted your sale in the Katy/Fulshear regional events, too! You can also create a simple sign to put out in your yard leading up to the sale. The more people know about your sale, the better your chances of selling those items!

5. Get Your Neighbors Involved

Why not make it a neighborhood event? Team up with your neighbors to have a block sale! More homes participating means more traffic and excitement. Plus, it’s a great way to strengthen community ties and make the day even more enjoyable.

6. Prepare for the Day

On the day of the sale, set up early to be ready for eager shoppers. Have plenty of change on hand—small bills and coins are a must! Bring water and snacks to keep your energy up, and consider setting up some shade if it’s a sunny day.

7. Be Friendly and Welcoming

A warm smile goes a long way! Greet your visitors, be willing to chat, and offer assistance. You might even make some new friends while you’re at it!

8. Plan for Unsold Items

Think ahead about what you’ll do with items that don’t sell. Consider donating them to a local charity, or save them for the next garage sale. Keeping it positive helps clear your space without any added stress!
