Celebrate National Poinsettia Day with Brookwood Community

December 12 2022

Did you know there is a beautiful fable about these flowers? A poor girl knew she would not be able to afford a present for Jesus’ birthday. An angel appears and tells the child that what matters most is the thought behind her gift. She collects weeds from the side of the road to put in the Baby Jesus’ manger. The weeds miraculously turn into beautiful red star blooms where they get the name, “La Flor de Nochebuena,” which translates to “The Christmas Eve Flower.”

Do you have your La Flor de Nochebuena yet? You still have time! In fact, Brookwood Citizens are famous for growing poinsettias. The Brookwood Horticulture enterprise produces approximately 50,000 poinsettias a year and provides meaningful work to over 100 adults with disabilities. Our Citizens are passionate about nurturing the vibrant poinsettias and take great pride in producing a quality product for you to enjoy. We have so many varieties to choose from, so head out to Brookwood and grab your Christmas Eve flowers!

About The Brookwood Community

Through the grace of God, The Brookwood Community provides an educational environment that creates meaningful work, builds a sense of belonging, and awakens genuine purpose in the lives of adults with disabilities.

We celebrate neurodiversity at The Brookwood Community. Brookwood provides meaning and purpose in the lives of adults with disabilities. Our Citizens are the heart of Brookwood. Brookwood’s day program started in 1983, and our first residential Citizens joined in 1985. Today, more than 200 Citizens work in one or more of our enterprises at our main campus in Brookshire or one of our two satellite locations in Richmond, Texas and The Woodlands, Texas. Over 100 Residential Citizens live on our 485-acre campus and another 130 Day Citizens live at home and commute daily to work on campus. Our Citizens enjoy genuine fellowship, participate in fitness activities in our indoor swimming pool and gymnasium, celebrate the presence of God in our interfaith worship center, and when necessary, receive care in our onsite health clinic.
