Spring ISD's 2025 Success Walk Unites Volunteers to Boost Student Attendance and Support Family Engagement
With clipboards, resource packets, and words of encouragement, Spring ISD staff and volunteers came together Saturday morning for the district’s 2025 Success Walk — a hands-on outreach effort aimed at improving student attendance and connecting families to crucial school services.
The event, held at Momentum High School, is a cornerstone of Spring ISD’s EVERYday Counts, Attendance Matterscampaign. Dozens of administrators, teachers, trustees, and community members spread out across neighborhoods, knocking on doors and calling families to offer support and highlight the impact of consistent school attendance on student success.
Superintendent Dr. Kregg Cuellar, who led part of the walk himself, spoke candidly about the importance of showing up.
“Students can’t learn if they’re not in class,” said Cuellar. “We want to emphasize the importance of being on time and present every day so they can take advantage of all the opportunities Spring ISD has to offer.”
Confronting Chronic Absenteeism in Spring ISD
Like many districts across the country, Spring ISD continues to battle chronic absenteeism. According to the Texas Education Agency’s most recent report, 30.1% of Spring ISD students were chronically absent during the 2023–2024 school year, meaning they missed 10% or more of instructional days. That translates to more than 1 in 4 students falling behind on classroom learning.
The district’s overall attendance rate stood at 91.5%, falling below the state’s recommended threshold for optimal academic engagement. For families and school leaders alike, that statistic isn’t just a number — it’s a call to action.

Board Secretary Kelly P. Hodges delivered a message of encouragement and support to volunteers before the walk began.
“As a board, we believe our greatest resource is our students,” Hodges said. “To reach their full potential, they must be in class, because every day truly counts. Spring ISD is your partner, and we are walking alongside our families, ready with the resources and support they need to help every child thrive.”
Community Action at Work
The 2025 Success Walk included a districtwide roll call led by Interim Chief of Academics LaTracy Harris, with each feeder pattern represented in person or virtually by their principals and leadership teams. After the kickoff, volunteers fanned out across the community and reached hundreds of households through in-person visits and a dedicated phone bank.
At each doorstep, families received customized information about free school meals, child care options, after-school programming, transportation, and personalized academic support — tools many families may not realize are available.
Momentum High School Principal Ayesha Ahmad-Burriss reminded attendees that attendance isn’t just about policy — it’s about building habits for a lifetime.
“Attendance is the foundation of success,” Ahmad-Burriss said. “From kindergarten onward, showing up every day makes the difference between struggle and achievement. Research tells us that students who miss too many days often fall behind, and that gap widens all the way through high school.”

Board members Deborah Jensen and Winford Adams Jr. also joined Cuellar and the leadership team in knocking on doors and speaking with families directly — offering encouragement, listening to concerns, and reinforcing the district’s commitment to every student.
“I love it, because we are a community of one,” Cuellar said. “We’re one family, one team, and when we come together in unity, our purpose is clear — serving every single child.”
A Districtwide Culture of Attendance
The Success Walk is more than a one-day event — it represents an ongoing effort by Spring ISD to shift the culture around attendance. Through the EVERYday Counts, Attendance Matters campaign, the district is investing in communication, early intervention, and partnerships with families to ensure students are supported both inside and outside the classroom.
