Preserving History While Paying Respect: Hodges Bend Cemetery
Last month, members of Fort Bend County Precinct 3 Commissioner Andy Meyers' team, Congressman Pete Olson, the Exchange Club of Sugar Land, and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) convened at Hodges Bend Cemetery in Fort Bend County's Bates Allen Park, where attendees rolled up their sleeves to help remove trees, brush and overgrowth. This graveyard, the final resting place of formerly enslaved people, was concealed from view for decades by trees and brush.
On March 2 at 4:00 PM, the DAR will gather again at Hodges Bend Cemetery to promote public awareness and historic preservation of the cemetery. Located on Old Richmond Road and Pheasant Creek Drive, the cemetery is on land granted by the Mexican government to Alexander Hodge, an American Revolutionary War Patriot who came to Texas as one of Stephen F. Austin's "Old Three Hundred" settlers. DAR is inviting the community to participate and learn more about this cemetery and how to preserve it. In case of inclement weather, this event will be postponed to a later date.
