New Playground Now Open at Bates Allen Park
On September 14, Fort Bend County Commissioner Dexter McCoy, the Fort Bend County Parks and Recreation team, local law enforcement and members of the community came together to celebrate the grand opening of a brand-new playground at Bates Allen Park.
Located in Kendleton, Bates Allen Park is the home of the Fort Bend County Heritage Unlimited Museum, whose mission is centered on educating the public to preserve, promote and perpetuate the history and contributions of community settlements in the region from 1865 to 1965. The Museum highlights African American history in a gallery-style setting, which symbolizes the identity and struggle of proud, industrious, and determined people of color whose roots stem from Fort Bend County. In fact, the FBC Heritage Unlimited Museum has been committed to educating the community on Fort Bend County African American accomplishments for almost 20 years.
Looking ahead, the new playground is part of a much broader plan to further beautify and punctuate the contributions of African Americans in Fort Bend County. This past spring, Fort Bend County commissioners approved a $4 million project to expand Bates Allen Park, including an African American Memorial that will link the historic African American cemeteries in the park.
"The new playground will bring joy, hope, and a sense of equality to an under-resourced community that is long overdue for new amenities. The playground is not just a place for fun and play; it's a space where memories will be made, friendships will blossom, and families will gather for years to come," said Commissioner McCoy.
