Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital Achieves System First with Minimally Invasive Vascular Surgery

July 25 2025

Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital has achieved a major milestone within the Memorial Hermann Health System with the successful completion of a pioneering vascular surgery performed by Stuart Harlin, MD, a board-certified vascular surgeon affiliated with Memorial Hermann. The team completed the hospital system’s first femoropopliteal bypass through the femoral vein using fluoroscopic guidance, marking a significant advancement in treatment for patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD).

Meet the Surgeon Behind the Breakthrough

Dr. Stuart Harlin, MD, is a board-certified vascular surgeon affiliated with Memorial Hermann. He earned his medical degree and completed his internship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, followed by a general surgery residency at Kessler Medical Center at Kessler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. He then completed a vascular surgery fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

With more than three decades of experience, Dr. Harlin specializes in minimally invasive vascular surgery, peripheral venous disease, venous insufficiency, and peripheral vascular disease. His clinical expertise includes varicose vein treatment, venous ulcer therapy, endovascular procedures, carotid stenting, aortic aneurysms, dialysis access, and balloon angioplasty. He also serves as associate professor and director of outpatient vascular operations in the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston.

A decorated Air Force medical veteran and active researcher, Dr. Harlin is widely respected for his patient-centered approach and commitment to advancing vascular care.

What Is a Femoropopliteal Bypass?

The femoropopliteal bypass is a procedure designed to reroute blood flow around blocked arteries in the leg. In this newly executed technique, surgeons used fluoroscopic imaging—continuous X-ray technology—to guide the creation of a bypass channel through the femoral vein. This restored blood flow from the superficial femoral artery to the popliteal artery, providing a safe and effective alternative for patients suffering from advanced PAD.

Traditionally, bypass surgery requires a large incision and longer recovery time. This innovative approach is minimally invasive, which means patients can often expect less discomfort, a shorter hospital stay, and reduced risk of complications compared to conventional open bypass surgery.

Advancing Patient Care in Katy and Beyond

Peripheral arterial disease affects millions of Americans and, if untreated, can lead to chronic pain, non-healing wounds, and in severe cases, amputation. By introducing this new vascular procedure, Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital is offering patients in the Greater Katy area an additional, less invasive treatment option that can help preserve mobility and quality of life.

This advancement adds to Memorial Hermann’s long-standing reputation for cardiovascular excellence. In July 2025, the American College of Cardiology recognized nine Memorial Hermann hospitals with its Platinum Performance Achievement Award for heart attack treatment and two, including Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital, with its Silver Performance Achievement Award. These honors demonstrate consistent success in delivering high-quality care based on nationally recognized clinical guidelines.

A Community Hospital with Advanced Capabilities

Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital has served the Katy community for more than 40 years, offering a full range of services including emergency medicine, orthopedics, women’s services, heart and vascular care, and a Level III Trauma Center. The hospital is nationally recognized for patient safety and quality and has achieved Magnet® recognition for nursing excellence.

The introduction of this new vascular procedure highlights Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital’s continued focus on integrating advanced technology, clinical expertise, and patient-centered care to meet the growing healthcare needs of residents in Katy and the surrounding areas.
