Harris County Sheriff’s Office Adds ABLE 2 Helicopter to Expand Air Support and Improve Public Safety Across Greater Houston

March 05 2026

Residents across Harris County may soon notice a new aircraft assisting deputies from above as the Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) expands its aviation capabilities with the addition of a new helicopter designed to strengthen emergency response and public safety operations.

The new aircraft, known as ABLE 2, is now part of the HCSO Air Support Unit and is expected to help deputies respond more quickly to emergencies, search for missing persons, and support officers on the ground across the county’s more than 1,700 square miles. For one of the largest counties in the United States, officials say the additional helicopter represents a meaningful investment in tools that help keep communities safe.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the aircraft will play an important role in strengthening the department’s ability to serve residents across the region.

“Getting this aircraft is very important for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office,” said Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. “This will be an added tool for us to better protect our community.”

Expanding Air Support for a Growing County

The decision to expand the sheriff’s office aviation capabilities began several years ago as county leaders evaluated the growing demands placed on law enforcement agencies serving the Houston metropolitan area and surrounding communities.

Sheriff Gonzalez and then–Chief Deputy Mike Lee identified the need to strengthen aerial resources to support deputies responding to emergencies ranging from vehicle pursuits to large-scale search operations.

“Helicopters are essential to modern-day law enforcement,” said Mike Lee, Director of HCSO Special Projects. “They help us provide surveillance, search for suspects or missing persons, safely manage vehicle pursuits, and support overall public safety operations.”

In a county that stretches from urban Houston neighborhoods to rural and suburban areas, air support can significantly reduce response times while giving deputies a broader view of unfolding situations.

Advanced Technology for Search and Emergency Response

The new Airbus AS350 B3 helicopter is equipped with advanced technology designed to support critical operations, especially during nighttime or low-visibility conditions.

Captain Chris Ecke, who oversees the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Air Support Unit, said the aircraft’s upgraded systems will help crews operate more effectively during challenging missions.

“It gives us a lot of ability to operate in low-light and nighttime conditions, and we’re able to get out there quicker,” said Captain Chris Ecke.

The helicopter features enhanced infrared sensors and upgraded surveillance technology, allowing crews to detect heat signatures and assist deputies in locating missing persons, tracking suspects, or surveying areas during emergencies.

Air support crews are often called upon when multiple critical incidents happen at the same time across the county.

“A lot of times air support calls come in simultaneously—whether it’s for a missing child, a pursuit, or even a natural disaster,” Captain Ecke said.

County Collaboration Secures Funding

Funding for the aircraft was secured through collaboration between the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and the Harris County Office of Budget and Management.

Director Daniel Ramos worked with the sheriff’s office to identify funding solutions, and the Harris County Commissioners Court unanimously approved the purchase, allowing the department to move forward with acquiring the helicopter.

Officials say the investment reflects a broader commitment to ensuring law enforcement agencies have the tools necessary to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies across the region.

What ABLE 2 Means for Harris County Communities

With ABLE 2 now operational, the helicopter will support a wide range of missions, including:

  • Locating missing children or vulnerable residents
  • Monitoring and assisting during vehicle pursuits
  • Providing aerial surveillance during critical incidents
  • Supporting disaster response and search-and-rescue operations
  • Assisting deputies responding to large-scale emergencies

For residents across Harris County—including communities throughout the Greater Houston area—the added air support means deputies can reach scenes faster, maintain visibility during complex incidents, and coordinate more effectively with units on the ground.

As Harris County continues to grow, officials say investments like ABLE 2 are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen public safety resources and ensure deputies have the tools needed to protect the communities they serve.
