Legacy Prairie Park Breaks Ground in Katy, Bringing Flood Protection, Trails and Regional Green Space to Growing Katy Court Area

A major new public green space is beginning to take shape in northwest Katy, where developers, city leaders and utility district partners recently broke ground on Legacy Prairie Park — a 56-acre project designed to serve both as critical flood infrastructure and a long-term recreational destination for nearby families.

Located near Morton Road, Katy Hockley Cut Off and Katy Hockley Road, the project will anchor the growing Legacy Prairie at Katy Court development while also creating new trails, playgrounds and open space connections for surrounding neighborhoods including Heritage Park West and Hunter’s Terrace.

As Katy continues to grow westward, projects like Legacy Prairie Park reflect a broader shift in how communities approach stormwater management and neighborhood design. Instead of hiding detention basins behind fences, developers and local governments are increasingly transforming them into usable public spaces that improve quality of life while also helping protect homes from flooding.

The new park is expected to serve approximately 650 homes within the Katy Court community, but project leaders say the vision extends well beyond the subdivision itself.

“Today marks an exciting milestone as Parkside Capital officially breaks ground on Legacy Prairie Park — a 56-acre regional detention and park amenity that will serve as the centerpiece of Legacy Prairie at Katy Court in the City of Katy,” said Brett Walker, president of Parkside Capital, the Houston-based land investment and development firm behind the Legacy Prairie at Katy Court community.

Walker said the project represents a different approach to development in fast-growing areas of Harris County and Katy.

“This project reflects what we believe modern land development should look like: infrastructure that not only serves a purpose, but creates lasting value for the community,” Walker said.

Flood Infrastructure Designed as Community Space

According to project information, Legacy Prairie Park will include extensive earthwork and drainage improvements alongside amenities designed to encourage outdoor recreation and neighborhood connectivity.

Planned features include:

  • 4.5 miles of trails
  • Wetlands and native prairie restoration
  • A floating boardwalk
  • Waterfront gathering areas
  • Nature-focused playground spaces
  • Butterfly gardens
  • Shade structures and seating
  • Nature play areas with tunnels and slides
  • Dry creek features
  • Mulch and decomposed granite walking paths

Construction documents also show reforestation efforts, native planting, irrigation systems and more than 125 new trees planned throughout the site.

The park was designed in collaboration with KGA DeForest Design LLC and is being developed through partnerships involving Parkside Capital, Katy West MUD, the City of Katy and Heritage Park West HOA.

Chris Harris, former Katy councilmember at-large, said community leaders spent years working to ensure the area included publicly accessible green space as development expanded.

“This is a shared development between Parkside Capital (Katy Courts neighborhood), Katy West MUD District, City of Katy and Hertiage Park West HOA,” Harris said.

Harris also noted the broader effort to increase accessible parkland throughout Katy over the last several years.

“Over the past 8-yrs over 100 acres of public greenspace has been added in the city thru the city and MUDs. Its been a worthwhile effort,” Harris said.

Connecting Neighborhoods, Schools and Outdoor Space

Site plans show the park positioned between several existing and future neighborhoods, with trail systems intended to improve walkability and connectivity throughout the area.

The project sits near Aristoi Classical Academy campuses and planned residential growth corridors around Katy Court. Renderings indicate the detention basin and trail network will function as both recreational infrastructure and a visual centerpiece for the surrounding development.

In addition to providing floodwater storage capacity, the park is expected to create more opportunities for walking, biking and outdoor gathering close to home — something increasingly valued by families searching for master-planned communities in the Katy area.

Walker said the project was designed with long-term community benefit in mind.

“Projects like this are an example of how functional infrastructure can be elevated into meaningful public-facing spaces that enhance both quality of life and long-term community value,” Walker said.

What This Means for Katy Residents

For nearby residents, the project represents more than another subdivision amenity. It reflects how Katy’s growth is increasingly being shaped around resiliency, outdoor access and shared community spaces.

As Harris County and west Houston continue to experience rapid development, detention infrastructure remains one of the most important components of protecting homes and roadways from heavy rainfall events. Projects like Legacy Prairie Park aim to balance those engineering needs with public use and neighborhood identity.

The result could become one of the area’s most distinctive examples of how flood-control infrastructure can also serve as a destination for families, students and nearby neighborhoods.

Residents in the Katy area can expect months of ongoing construction activity as earthwork, drainage improvements, landscaping and trail development continue across the site.
