Fulshear Police Celebrate Citizens Police Academy Class 8 Graduation

January 04 2025

The Fulshear Police Department marked a milestone recently with the graduation of its Citizens Police Academy Class 8, a program designed to strengthen the bond between local law enforcement and the community. The 11-week course, held every Thursday evening, provided participants with valuable insights into police operations, including patrol procedures, criminal investigations, and community policing.

Captain Mike McCoy of the Fulshear Police Department expressed his appreciation for the program’s participants, saying, “Thank you to everyone who attended and graduated last night from the Fulshear Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy Class 8. Your unwavering commitment has been instrumental in the program’s continued success.”

Building Stronger Community Connections Through Education

The Fulshear Citizens Police Academy aims to bridge the gap between residents and law enforcement, fostering greater understanding and collaboration. Throughout the program, participants explored various aspects of police work, such as Patrol Procedures, Investigative Techniques, Community Policing, and Emergency Response.

A key feature of the program was an interactive session with the Fulshear Police K-9 unit. Graduates had the chance to learn about the role of police K-9s in law enforcement and witness live demonstrations of their capabilities in assisting investigations.

Focus on Criminal Investigations, DWI, and Narcotics Enforcement

As part of the program, participants were also exposed to more specialized topics. One session focused on Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) investigations, allowing participants to understand the complexities of handling impaired drivers. Another class covered narcotics enforcement, where attendees learned about the dangers of various drugs and how law enforcement combats drug-related crime.

“Thank you to the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office for providing our Citizens Police Academy class with an insightful and engaging tour of the jail facility tonight,” Captain McCoy added. This collaboration with the sheriff’s office offered graduates an exclusive look at the local jail system, enhancing their understanding of the corrections side of law enforcement.

Hands-On Learning Through Simulated Police Exercises

A standout feature of the Fulshear Citizens Police Academy was the hands-on experience provided to participants. During the final weeks of the program, graduates had the opportunity to take part in simulated traffic stops and building clearing exercises, mirroring the real-world challenges police officers face on duty. These exercises helped participants appreciate the procedures and decision-making involved in police work, offering them a deeper understanding of law enforcement.

Support from the Fulshear Police Foundation and Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office

The success of the academy was made possible by several community partners, including the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, which hosted a tour of the county jail, and the Fulshear Police Foundation, which generously sponsored the cost of the academy shirts. These collaborations allowed for an enriched experience for participants, who gained a well-rounded perspective on the multifaceted work of law enforcement.
