Free Summer Camps and Nature Programs for Kids Offered by Harris County Precinct 4 in 2025
As families across Greater Houston plan for summer break, Harris County Precinct 4, led by Commissioner Lesley Briones, is stepping up to provide free summer programs for kids that combine education, creativity, and outdoor fun. From STEM and art-focused camps to nature adventures and community celebrations, these programs aim to keep children engaged, safe, and inspired while school is out.
"Kids across Harris County are counting down the days until summer break—dreaming of adventure and fun summer days," said Commissioner Briones. "For parents, summer is a balancing act. It is about making sure our kids have opportunities even when resources are stretched thin."
STEAM 4 Kids: A Hands-On Science and Art Summer Camp
One of this summer’s most anticipated programs is STEAM 4 Kids, an eight-week free summer camp focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Designed for children in grades K–6, the camp runs from June 16 to August 7, Monday through Thursday from 1:00–3:00 p.m., and is hosted at five Precinct 4 community centers:
- Bayland Community Center (6400 Bissonnet St, Houston, TX 77074)
- Burnett Bayland Community Center (6026 Chimney Rock Rd, Houston, TX 77081)
- Freed Community Center (6818 Shadyvilla Ln, Houston, TX 77055)
- Steve Radack Community Center (18650 Clay Rd, Houston, TX 77084)
- Richard & Meg Weekley Community Center (8440 Greenhouse Rd, Cypress, TX 77433)
Children attending STEAM 4 Kids will receive free lunch from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., thanks to a partnership with the Houston Food Bank. Activities include building projects, creative experiments, and collaborative play—all designed to deepen curiosity and a love of learning. Registration is open through May 26, and families can learn more at hcp4.info/steam4kids_flyer.
Boys & Girls Club Full-Day Camp
In partnership with Precinct 4's nonprofit, Precinct4Forward, the precinct is also continuing its full-day summer camp in collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Houston. This camp provides a safe, supportive environment for children to build skills in literacy, math, leadership, athletics, dance, art, and social-emotional learning. Nature Programming: Outdoor Adventures Across the Region
Precinct 4’s summer programming doesn’t stop indoors. Nature enthusiasts of all ages can take part in outdoor education through programs hosted at the Kleb Woods Nature Preserve, John Paul Landing Environmental Education Center, and other locations. Popular free summer activities include:
- Kleb Night Out: Escape Room (multiple sessions on June 13)
- Summer Field Day at Kleb Woods – June 27
- An Evening Under the Stars at John Paul Landing EEC – June 21
- Know Your Fish / Let’s Go Fishing / Life in the Lake – Various dates in June
- Young Birders Club – June 14
- Nature’s Way Story Time and Homestead Hour – Ongoing
These hands-on experiences help children explore the region’s rich ecosystems while cultivating appreciation for local wildlife and conservation.
Building Stronger Communities Through Free Summer Programs
Commissioner Briones emphasized that these initiatives are rooted in equity and access. "It’s about giving every child the chance to learn, grow, and explore—no matter their zip code or their family’s financial situation."
By offering free STEM camps, outdoor learning, and cultural events, Harris County Precinct 4 aims to support working families and foster community connection throughout the summer months.
