Fostering Musical Excellence in Students: Registration Open for Katy ISD Summer Music Camps
Registration is now open for Katy ISD's Summer Music Camps, a perfect opportunity for young musicians to keep their skills sharp during the summer months. Each of the district's fine arts camps offers a unique exploration of music, suitable for various ages and levels of experience.
Among the slated programs this year is the Elementary Music camp, running from May 28 through 31 for rising 4th and 5th graders. The 4th grade session runs from 8:30 - 11:30 AM, while the 5th grade session takes place from 12:30 - 3:30 PM at Jenks Elementary.
Equally exciting is the Jazz camp also being held from May 28 through 31, which is designed specifically for rising 7th through 12th graders. This camp will be hosted at Taylor High School.
Junior high students have several options. The JH Choir camp is from June 3-6 for rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, taking place at Jordan High School. Two sessions of JH Orchestra camp are available. The first session is from June 3-6 at Paetow High School with the second session from June 10-13 at Jordan High School, both for rising 7th, 8th and 9th graders. Finally, JH Band camp is set to run from June 3-7 and June 10-14 at Tompkins High School, also for rising 7th, 8th and 9th graders.
Katy ISD's music education program has received national recognition for its comprehensive music offerings. The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation named Katy ISD a "Best Community for Music Education" in 2024, marking the 22nd year it has earned this honor.
"We are thrilled to once again receive this prestigious accolade, which reflects our unwavering dedication to fostering a robust, world-class music program for our students," commented Damon Archer, Executive Director of Fine Arts at Katy ISD. "Year after year, our passionate music educators empower and inspire our students to strive for excellence, encouraging them to unleash their creative potential," Archer added.
The district earned the "Best Communities" distinction following a rigorous review process by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas, which considered factors such as funding, graduation requirements, participation rates in music classes, instructional hours, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs.
