Cinco Ranch Branch Library Presents: African Hand-Drumming - A Celebration of Black History Month
In celebration of Black History Month, the Cinco Ranch Branch Library invites you to a special musical event, "African Hand-Drumming". On Saturday, February 10th, the library's meeting room will come alive with the traditional tribal rhythms of West African djembe drumming, starting at 11:00 am.
Gregg "Jebada" Powell, founder and director of the Joy of Djembe Drumming Ensemble, will be sharing his soul-stirring drumming talents with the audience. Powell is no stranger to the world of hand drumming, having started his journey in 1964 in the Spanish Harlem neighborhood of Upper Manhattan in New York City. His expertise spans across Latin, Afro-Cuban, and West African rhythms.
Powell will talk about the history of the djembe drum and the cultural heritage of the people who originally crafted it. The djembe drum was born from the creativity of the Mandé people during the Malian Empire, approximately 400 to 800 years ago. This rope-tuned, skin-covered drum, traditionally played with bare hands, is a symbol of Africa’s rich musical traditions.
Audience members will be treated to a variety of rhythms demonstrating the influences of different countries and traditions. This performance is a testament to the diversity and unity of African culture, portraying its fabric through shared music and history.
The special performance is brought to you by the generous support of the Friends of the Cinco Ranch Branch Library and is free and open to the public. For more information, visit the Fort Bend County Libraries website, or call the Cinco Ranch Branch Library at 281-395-1311 or the library system’s Communications Office at 281-633-4734.
Join in celebrating Black History Month through this symphony of sound, and let the rhythm of the djembe drum transport you to the heart of West Africa.
