Ring in 2026 with a First Day Hike: Dozens of Austin-Area State Park Events Celebrate Nature, Wellness, and Community

December 22 2025

As 2026 marks the beginning of America’s semiquincentennial celebration, Central Texans are invited to ring in the New Year the healthy and adventurous way — with a First Day Hike at a Texas State Park.

Part of a nationwide initiative encouraging people to get outside and explore public lands, First Day Hikes on January 1, 2026, will take place at dozens of parks throughout the Austin, San Antonio, and Hill Country areas. From sunrise strolls and guided bird walks to midnight summits, dog-friendly trails, and even polar plunges, there’s a First Day event for everyone — whether you’re in hiking boots, on a bike, or paddling a kayak.

"Each year, Texas leads the nation as thousands of Texans turn out to a nearby state park to ring in the new year and celebrate with a First Day Hike," said Rodney Franklin, director of Texas State Parks. “There is no better way to spend a beautiful January day than walking with friends and family at a Texas State Park.”

A Texas Tradition Grows

Last year, Texas shattered its previous records with 178 First Day events, hosting nearly 9,500 participants who logged over 18,000 miles in one day. In fact, Texas once again led the entire country in number of parks, events, and participants.

From the scenic trails at Pedernales Falls to the ancient dinosaur tracks at Government Canyon, every park offers a chance to welcome the new year while connecting with nature and history. And this year, First Day Hikes carry even more meaning, as they also kick off the national celebration of America’s 250th birthday — the semiquincentennial.

“As our country starts to celebrate its 250th birthday in 2026, we invite you to start your year on a First Day Hike enjoying and celebrating our incredible public lands,” said America’s State Parks President Paul McCormack.
