McGown Honored with School Dedication
Cypress, TX - Sue McGown of Alpha Alpha Eta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was recognized by the Cypress Fairbanks School Board with an elementary school named in her honor. The Sue McGown Elementary School was unveiled during the ribbon cutting ceremony on October 16, 2022. She celebrated the occasion with an enthusiastic audience of family, friends, and former students. Board members and district staff in attendance commended Sue for her outstanding leadership in the community.
As a Principal, Sue opened Cypress Woods High School and Hamilton Middle School over her career. Both schools held exemplary status with the latter being an exemplary campus for over ten years. Their distinguished fine arts and elective programs were notable, successfully winning many awards!
Sue was awarded the Walter Kase Award for Excellence (Anti-Defamation) and she served on state committees for elementary schools. Upon retirement Sue became the Assistant Superintendent in Illinois. She continues to share her passion for education by coaching individuals in their alternative certification programs and development programs for principals.
Under the leadership of Sue McGown, her schools developed the acclaimed "212 culture," which is a measurement where students put forth the extra effort to excel beyond their boundaries. This "212" mindset is the culture already imbedded in the new Sue McGown Elementary School.
We acknowledge Sue for her work and contributions to the Cypress community and beyond. Sue finds joy in knowing she contributed to her students pursuing their dreams. She remains very appreciative of her staff, students, and the parents during her journey in Cypress Fairbanks School District.
