The Museum of Fine Arts Presents: Marc Chagall: Color, Symbolism, and Religion
28515 Old Washington Road
Hockley ,TX 77447
Marc Chagall, born Moishe Shagal, was part of the Jewish community of what was then the Russian Empire. His art progressed through many styles, but he is best known as a major Jewish artist who not only paints in brilliant colors, but has produced stained glass works, drawings, stage sets, ceramics, and book illustrations. His works often reflect his dreams of his earlier life in the Jewish Pale of what is now Belarus and of scenes taken from the Bible. His remarkable understanding of the use of color and light was even noted by Picasso. We may not always understand what each artwork means, but you will always be fascinated by the colors and the images. Chagall escaped from Europe during WWII and came to the United States but did return to Europe after the war. Sadly, the town of his birth of which many of his paintings refer, had been destroyed during the war.
