Katy Manor Halloween Safety Reminder for October 31
Children will be walking Katy Manor streets from dusk into the evening on Saturday, October 31. Drivers, families and homeowners can each help make Halloween safer with a few practical steps before trick-or-treating begins.
Slow down and watch for children
Drivers should reduce speed on neighborhood streets, avoid distractions and scan near intersections, driveways and parked vehicles. Children may step into the street between parked cars, where they are harder to see. Before backing out of a driveway, check carefully for pedestrians. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urges extra attention to children and pedestrians on Halloween.
Make trick-or-treaters easier to see
Reflective tape on costumes or treat bags, glow sticks and flashlights can help drivers notice children after dark. Families should also make sure masks or costume accessories do not block a child's view. Use sidewalks where available, cross at intersections or marked crossings, and watch for turning vehicles.
Young children should go with a responsible adult. Older children going in groups should know their route and when to return home.
Prepare walkways and front doors
Residents welcoming trick-or-treaters can turn on porch lights and clear hoses, cords, toys and decorations from the path to the door. Check that steps and entrances are visible. Battery-operated lights avoid an open flame where costumes and visitors pass.
Keep pets indoors and away from the front door during frequent visits. Repeated door openings, unfamiliar costumes and doorbells can stress animals or give them a chance to slip outside.
Check treats and allergens
Adults should inspect candy before children eat it and discard packages that are open or damaged. For children with food allergies, read ingredient labels carefully on every treat. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends checking labels rather than assuming a familiar brand is safe. Neighbors can consider offering small nonfood treats for children who cannot eat certain candies.
