NMSC initiated the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program with over 1.3 million juniors across the nation, who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) in 2023. The highest-scoring entrants in each state were subsequently selected as Semifinalists.
Established in 1955, NMSC aims to identify and honor academically gifted U.S. high school students while stimulating enhanced support for their education. The organization also manages programs for entities wishing to fund college undergraduate scholarships, earning a reputation for quality and integrity. Since its inception, NMSC has recognized over 3.5 million students and provided approximately 470,000 scholarships totaling over $1.8 billion. NMSC, a not-for-profit organization, operates independently without government assistance.

The pathway to becoming a Finalist requires the Semifinalists to submit a comprehensive scholarship application, presenting their academic record, involvement in school and community activities, leadership skills, employment, and other achievements. They are also required to submit their SAT or ACT scores and an essay. Katy's 2025 Semifinalists are set to be acknowledged at a District reception on October 28.
