Katy ISD Partners with Needville-Based Covenant K9 Detection Services to Enhance School Security Measures

October 04 2024

In an ongoing endeavor to safeguard its students and staff, Katy ISD has announced its partnership with local firm Covenant K9 Detection Services to bolster security measures across its schools. The Katy ISD Police Department will now work closely with the Needville-based organization, introducing an added level of security to all schools within the district.

Covenant K9 Detection Services, recognized for their expertise in training canines and handlers, is primarily committed to providing support for weapons and narcotics detection in schools, among other environments. Offering an array of certified services such as narcotics, weapons, explosives, vapor, and currency detection, the organization caters not only to educational institutions but also to private businesses, security companies, and residential clients. Additionally, the company stands out for providing families with discreet services concerning potential substance use without the obligation of reporting any illicit findings.

The collaboration between Katy ISD and Covenant K9 Detection Services is set to introduce a team that includes a Katy ISD police officer, a K9 handler from Covenant, and a meticulously trained canine. This team will work closely with designated school safety personnel and administrators, conducting random sweeps of secondary campuses and parking lots throughout the academic year.

Katy ISD Police Chief Henry Gaw stated, "We are committed to using all available tools to keep our students and staff safe. These K9 teams will enhance and strengthen our already robust safety measures across the district.”

Katy ISD has historically made use of K9 units as an integral part of its specialized security teams, and this newly formed partnership is an extension of that effort. The district will leverage Covenant's expertise for the training and management of the canines, ensuring a cost-effective approach to solidify its comprehensive safety and security strategy.
