New Pickleball Courts and Inclusive Playground in Meyer Park Bring Community Together

February 05 2025

Community members and local officials gathered at Meyer Park to celebrate the completion of two major recreational enhancements: brand-new pickleball courts and an inclusive playground designed for children of all abilities. The event, hosted by Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey, highlighted the positive impact of these improvements as part of the award-winning Parks and Trails Master Plan for the Precinct.

“Improvements like the inclusive playground and pickleball courts serve as prime examples of taking residents’ input from our Precinct 3 Parks and Trails Master Plan and turning that information into actual projects for better outdoor amenities,” said Commissioner Ramsey. “And because we have the largest parks and trails system in Harris County, this remains one of our top priorities. We love our parks and trails because they enhance the lives of our Precinct 3 residents.”

A Playground for All

The newly installed 8,650-square-foot inclusive playground at Meyer Park features an array of interactive elements aimed at fostering creativity, learning, and social engagement. Highlights include an electronic piano panel, musical chimes, a mini truck, and a playhouse. Additionally, the Channings Joy Foundation contributed a Communication Board, which allows children to express themselves through visual symbols and words, ensuring a more accessible and engaging play experience for those with speech or cognitive challenges.

The Rise of Pickleball in Precinct 3

Meyer Park’s new pickleball courts reflect the skyrocketing popularity of the sport, which has seen exponential growth in recent years. Originating in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, pickleball is a fast-paced game that blends elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Played on a smaller court with paddles and a perforated plastic ball, the sport is lauded for its accessibility to players of all ages and skill levels.

As demand for pickleball courts increases nationwide, Harris County Precinct 3 is responding by expanding its offerings. The new courts at Meyer Park are part of a broader three-park project that will bring additional courts to I.T. May Park in Crosby and Russ Poppe Family Park in Cypress, both of which are currently under construction. Once completed, Precinct 3 will feature a total of 12 pickleball courts, ensuring residents have ample opportunities to enjoy the sport.

Expanding Recreational Opportunities in Harris County

Meyer Park, located at 7700 Cypresswood Drive in Spring, Texas, is a beloved community space within Precinct 3’s extensive network of parks, trails, and recreational facilities. Home to 72 parks, 10 community and nature centers, and eight hike-and-bike trails, Precinct 3 manages the Spring Creek Greenway, the longest urban-forested corridor in the United States.
