Police vs. Firefighters: Battle of the Badges Returns Across Greater Houston June 29–July 5

June 19 2026

Firefighters and police officers spend all year serving their communities, and occasionally engaging in a little friendly rivalry along the way. This summer, residents across the Greater Houston Area have a chance to help decide who comes out on top.

Gulf Coast Blood's annual Battle of the Badges returns June 29 through July 5, 2026, inviting community members to donate blood and cast their vote for either Team Police or Team Fire. While the competition adds a fun twist, the real goal is much bigger: helping ensure local hospitals have the lifesaving blood supply they need for emergencies, surgeries, cancer treatments, and countless other medical situations.

As families prepare for Fourth of July celebrations, Battle of the Badges offers another meaningful way to show community spirit. While fireworks may light up the sky for a few moments, a blood donation can make a difference in someone's life long after the holiday weekend is over.

Team Police or Team Fire?

Every donor gets to choose a side.

Will residents rally behind the police officers who patrol neighborhood streets, respond to emergencies, and work to keep communities safe? Or will firefighters earn the most support from the families and neighborhoods they protect every day?

When donors give blood during Battle of the Badges, they simply tell Gulf Coast Blood staff whether they are donating on behalf of local police or fire departments. At the end of the campaign, the winning team earns community bragging rights and recognition on Gulf Coast Blood's website and social media channels.

For those supporting law enforcement, organizers encourage donors to cast their vote for Police in this year's competition.

No matter which side wins, every donation helps patients throughout the region.

The Real Winners Are the Patients

The rivalry may grab attention, but the true impact happens after a donor rolls up a sleeve.

The blood collected during Battle of the Badges could help a child undergoing cancer treatment, a trauma patient rushed into emergency surgery after an accident, or a neighbor facing a serious medical crisis. In many cases, blood products cannot be manufactured or replaced—they can only come from volunteer donors.

During the summer months, blood donations often decline as families travel and schedules become busier. At the same time, hospitals continue caring for patients who depend on a safe and reliable blood supply every day.

That's why community blood drives remain so important.

In less than an hour, a donor can make a contribution that may help save multiple lives.

A Different Way to Celebrate Independence Week

The week leading up to Independence Day is often filled with parades, cookouts, fireworks and family gatherings. Battle of the Badges adds another opportunity to give back to the community while supporting the first responders who serve it every day.

Every day, police officers, firefighters, paramedics and hospital teams answer calls they never see coming. Battle of the Badges gives residents a chance to support all of them through a simple act that takes less than an hour but can have a lasting impact.

Whether you're rooting for Team Police or Team Fire, one thing is certain: someone in a local hospital will be grateful you showed up.

Residents can schedule an appointment and learn more about participating by visiting giveblood.org/badges.
