Montgomery County Summer Reading Program 2026 Invites Sila Families to Unearth a Story This Summer

North Houston  /  Katy / Fulshear
June 01 2026

For Sila families looking for meaningful, affordable ways to keep children engaged during the summer months, the Montgomery County Memorial Library System (MCMLS) is once again opening the doors to a season of discovery, creativity, and learning.

The library system's 2026 Summer Reading Program, themed "Unearth a Story™," runs from June 1 through July 25 and offers free reading challenges, educational programs, and family-friendly events for residents of all ages throughout Montgomery County.

At a time when many parents are searching for activities that help prevent the "summer slide" while keeping children entertained, the program provides a valuable opportunity for Sila families to stay connected to reading and learning during the school break.

More Than Just Books

This year's dinosaur-inspired theme encourages participants to explore stories, history, science, and imagination through reading and hands-on experiences.

"We invite our community to rediscover your MCMLS libraries this summer," said MCMLS Executive Library Director Dr. Janna Hoglund. "All ages are welcome to participate in fun programs and a reading challenge while reconnecting with all the great services, activities, and opportunities your library provides — innovative technology, countless titles, creative programs, and connections with our team and neighbors."

The free Summer Reading Program consists of two components: a self-paced reading challenge and a wide variety of events hosted throughout the library system's seven locations.

Whether participants prefer traditional books, audiobooks, newspapers, magazines, articles, or e-books, all reading counts toward the challenge. Families can even count reading together aloud as part of their progress.

Families can also attend events at any MCMLS location across Montgomery County while choosing one designated "home library" for reading challenge participation and reward redemption.

Free Events Throughout the Summer

Beyond the reading challenge, MCMLS libraries will host dozens of free programs designed to appeal to children, teens, adults, and multigenerational families.

Residents can expect a variety of activities throughout the eight-week program, including:

  • Magicians
  • Bubble shows
  • Variety shows featuring music and dance
  • Arts and crafts
  • Puppet performances
  • Interactive games
  • Movies
  • Book clubs
  • Storytellers
  • Wildlife presentations
  • Coding activities
  • Scavenger hunts
  • Henna art
  • Sewing and knitting programs
  • Pizza parties

Some programs may require free tickets or advance registration due to limited space or supplies, but all events remain free and open to the public.

Importantly, registration for the reading challenge is not required to attend events.

How the Reading Challenge Works

Participants can track their progress digitally through the Reader Zone app or use a printed reading log available at their local library.

While registration opens in May, reading and logging officially begin on June 1.

Readers may choose to track either books completed or minutes spent reading. Once they reach their goals, participants can bring their completed reading logs to their designated home library and receive rewards for their accomplishments.

The flexible structure allows families to customize the challenge based on age, reading level, and personal goals.

Why Summer Reading Matters

Programs like the MCMLS Summer Reading Program do more than fill calendars. They help children maintain literacy skills during summer break, encourage lifelong reading habits, and create opportunities for families to spend time learning together.

The 2026 theme, Unearth a Story™, comes from the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), a nationwide initiative supported by member libraries and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.

Focused on dinosaurs, paleontology, archaeology, and discovery, the theme highlights the idea that every book, every community, and every person has stories waiting to be uncovered.

For Sila families, that message aligns naturally with the spirit of community life—exploring new ideas, sharing experiences, and creating memories together throughout the summer.

What Happens Next

Residents interested in participating can visit any Montgomery County Memorial Library System location beginning now to learn more about the Summer Reading Program, pick up calendars of events, or prepare to register through Reader Zone.

MCMLS operates seven library locations across Montgomery County, along with a Genealogy and Preservation Center and a Law Library. Program details, event schedules, and updates are available through the library system's website and social media channels.

As summer gets underway, Sila families have an opportunity to turn reading into an adventure—one book, one discovery, and one story at a time.
