Katy ISD Moves Forward with More Than $13 Million in Support Services and Maintenance Facility Projects

Katy / Fulshear  /  Katy / Fulshear
July 13 2026

Katy ISD is preparing a series of major facility improvements designed to strengthen the behind-the-scenes operations that keep campuses, district vehicles, maintenance requests and community events running across the school system.

Four publicly funded projects are planned at the district’s Support Services, West Maintenance, South Maintenance and Central Maintenance facilities. Together, the projects represent an estimated investment of approximately $13.79 million and will affect nearly 35,000 square feet of district operational space.

For Katy ISD families, employees and taxpayers, these are not highly visible projects like a new school or stadium. Their impact, however, reaches nearly every campus. The employees who work from these facilities manage repairs, maintain vehicles and equipment, coordinate facility use, process work orders and provide financial and administrative support throughout the district.

The improvements are part of Katy ISD’s Bond 2023 program and are intended to provide more room for employees, equipment, storage, training and daily operations as enrollment and staffing needs increase.

Support Services Complex Renovation Planned on Franz Road

Katy ISD plans an approximately $5.3 million renovation of its Support Services Complex at 5364 Franz Road in Katy.

Construction is currently scheduled to begin Dec. 1, 2026, with completion targeted for Dec. 1, 2027. The project will renovate approximately 11,000 square feet of existing space.

Plans call for the demolition of interior partitions and the expansion and reconfiguration of the Support Services office area. The work is expected to add offices and meeting space, enlarge the existing training room and relocate the warehouse office, break room and storage area.

The broader Bond 2023 project description also includes mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades and a review of the facility’s additional space needs. The Support Services Complex renovation received an original bond allocation of $6,474,600, while the current construction filing lists an estimated project cost of $5.3 million.

The facility opened in 2004 and has not undergone significant changes since then, according to district project information.

The original complex included expansions for Food Service, the Warehouse, Print Shop, Purchasing, Transportation and Maintenance and Operations. The property also previously housed the Katy ISD Police Department, which later relocated to a newer facility on Franz Road east of Morton Ranch High School.

West Maintenance Warehouse Expansion Will Add 5,400 Square Feet

A separate project at the same 5364 Franz Road property will expand Katy ISD’s West Maintenance facility.

The approximately $1.66 million renovation and expansion is scheduled to begin Sept. 1, 2026, and is expected to be completed by Aug. 31, 2027.

The project will add a new frame and concrete slab and expand the existing pre-engineered metal building, commonly known as a PEMB, to enlarge the warehouse. Approximately 5,400 square feet are included in the project.

The West Maintenance facility opened in 2003 and has not received major changes since that time, according to Katy ISD’s Bond 2023 information.

Additional warehouse space can help the district organize equipment, tools, replacement materials and other supplies needed to respond to maintenance demands across a growing number of schools and facilities.

South Maintenance Facility to Gain Offices and Employee Workspace

Katy ISD is also planning an approximately $1.63 million renovation and expansion of the South Maintenance facility at 3151 Falcon Landing Blvd. in Katy.

Construction is scheduled to begin Sept. 1, 2026, with completion anticipated by Aug. 31, 2027. The work will affect approximately 5,200 square feet.

Plans call for enclosing an existing exterior canopy area of the pre-engineered metal building and enlarging the office area. The expansion will add an office and a touchdown area, which is typically used as flexible workspace for employees who may not need a permanent desk but require space to complete paperwork, coordinate assignments or work between field visits.

South Maintenance opened in 2015. Although it is newer than Katy ISD’s other maintenance locations, district officials identified additional space as necessary to support continued growth and increased staffing needs.

New Central Maintenance Facility Planned Near Franz Road

The largest of the three maintenance projects is a new Central Maintenance facility at 20400 Franz Road in Katy.

The approximately $5.2 million project will include construction of a new maintenance building and an attic stock warehouse building. Plans cover approximately 13,300 square feet of new construction.

Work is scheduled to begin Sept. 1, 2026, and continue through Aug. 31, 2027.

The Central Maintenance facility opened in 2002, but the district’s current satellite operation is housed in a portable building without a dedicated shop, storage space, offices or employee support areas.

The new facility is intended to provide those functions, along with exterior open space and parking. Katy ISD’s Bond 2023 planning information describes Central as the district’s fourth maintenance satellite office.

The project is expected to bring the Central facility more closely in line with the district’s South, East and West maintenance operations while giving employees permanent space to store equipment, perform work and support campus needs.

Why Katy ISD’s Maintenance Facilities Matter

Maintenance and Support Services operations are largely out of sight for most families, but the work performed by these departments affects the condition, safety and daily use of Katy ISD campuses.

The Support Services Department oversees financial functions including accounting, budgeting, compliance, fixed assets, finance and payroll. It also provides support to the district’s Business and Financial Services departments so employees have the tools and resources needed to address repairs and operational problems efficiently.

Beyond those administrative duties, Support Services oversees the district’s Fleet Mechanic Shop, Warehouse Department and Facility Rentals Department.

A team of six fleet mechanics maintains and repairs more than 350 white fleet vehicles, including trucks, vans and equipment such as trailers, mowers, blowers, trimmers and lifts.

The Warehouse Department manages the district’s work order system, helping prioritize repairs and schedule preventive maintenance. The department processes more than 65,000 work orders in an average year.

The Facility Rentals Department coordinates air conditioning, heating and parking lot schedules for before- and after-school programs, weekend activities and campus rentals. The department manages approximately 84,000 events each year.

That workload grows as Katy ISD adds students, employees, campuses, vehicles and community activities.

Bond 2023 Projects Address Longstanding Space Needs

Katy ISD’s Central, East, West and South maintenance facilities opened between 2001 and 2015.

East Maintenance opened in 2001, Central Maintenance opened in 2002, West Maintenance opened in 2003 and South Maintenance opened in 2015. District project documents state that the facilities have not received major changes since their respective openings.

The Bond 2023 improvements are intended to add office space, storage, employee support areas, exterior work areas and parking where needed.

District officials cited enrollment growth and the need to accommodate additional staff as the primary reasons for the projects. The improvements are also intended to protect building integrity and give maintenance employees spaces that better match the scale of Katy ISD’s current operations.

For taxpayers, the projects illustrate how school district growth affects more than classroom capacity. New campuses and larger student populations also require additional mechanics, warehouse staff, maintenance employees, financial personnel, equipment and administrative support.

What Happens Next

Construction on the West, South and Central Maintenance projects is currently scheduled to begin in September 2026 and conclude in August 2027.

The Support Services Complex renovation is scheduled to begin in December 2026 and continue through December 2027.

Combined, the projects include approximately 34,900 square feet of renovation, expansion and new construction. Additional information about contractors, construction phasing and possible temporary staff relocations was not included in the available project filings.

As the projects move forward, residents may see construction activity at the Franz Road and Falcon Landing Boulevard properties. The work is expected to remain focused on district operational facilities rather than student instructional areas.

My Neighborhood News will continue following Katy ISD Bond 2023 construction, school facility improvements and other developments affecting students, employees, families and taxpayers throughout the Katy community.
