CFISD Standout Honored as TD Club Football Scholar-Athlete Award Finalist
Bridgeland High School senior Gabriel Nicholson was among the football standouts honored as finalists for the Touchdown Club of Houston’s 2022 High School Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. The 26 honorees were recognized during the High School Football Scholar-Athlete Luncheon, held Feb. 22 at the Bayou City Event Center.
All finalists receive a $500 scholarship from the Touchdown Club of Houston, with the top three honorees receiving additional scholarship money.
Football coaches are allowed to nominate one senior from their program, and finalists were selected by representatives from the offices of the presidents at Houston Baptist University, Rice University, Texas Southern University and the University of Houston. Candidates are judged on academic honors (nominees have the highest grade-point average on their respective teams) in addition to their citizenship and football accolades.
Two former CFISD student-athletes have won the award—Cypress Ranch High School graduate Alex O’Connor in 2017 and Cypress Creek graduate Jonathan Monroe in 2011. Other recent top finishers include Cy-Fair High School alumnus Graham Lakin (2018 runner up) and Jersey Village High School graduate Mitchell Fly (2014 runner up).
